I understand that this is "ask" TRP, not "tell" TRP, but the main sub is down, so fight me.

Nineteen year old college student here.

I've always been into fitness, gymnastics, and martial arts growing up, but I grew way too fast in my early teen years and the weight never caught up the way people said it would. Eating 1200 calories a day while being pretty active and working out with 20 lbs dumbells will make sure of that.

I'm markedly lean, more attractive than average (their words not mine), musically inclined, and super good at push pull. (I get practice. My workplace is overrun by women.)

I've also, due to both internal mental training, and outside affirmation (being in leadership positions at college and work) acquired a rather strong "I'm the boss and I do whatever the fuck I want" type of frame, however, my size, (160 lbs at 6'0") really holds me back.

The height works in my favor, but I'm just not as masculine and larger-than-life as I want to be.

Yesterday I went into the gym for the first time and hit a grueling all-compound, full body workout. This morning I ate two lbs of oatmeal for breakfast. Took my skinny ass an hour to put it down. In another hour or so I'm hitting the gym and couldn't be more excited.

Baby steps people.

I've always wanted to be that 6'0" 200 lbs man. It'll take time but I'll get there eventually.

The main sub is not down. Access it through a browser and click past the quarantine warning. After doing so you shouldn't have an issue using the reddit app.

Meat & potatoes & consistency. Count calories if the scale is not going out (as well as your strength). Weight on the scale and bar increasing = new muscle.

Somewhat off-topic but the main sub is just "quarantined" not down. AFAIK it's still up and active. I've gotten back to it and, as of late, posts have been showing back up on my Reddit app as well.

[–]idontevenlift375 points6 points  (9 children) | Copy Link

How do you get back into it? I’ve confirmed my email address but I still can’t get in.

[–]scrapir3 points4 points  (7 children) | Copy Link

Type in the full address url and then it will take you to a warning page. After that you should be good to go.

[–]MyRedditAccountSSV2 points3 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

Says ”Sorry you don’t have access to this”

[–]lastdumra3 points4 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

You have to do it on a browser, not on an app.

Once you have confirmed, on a browser, that you want to see the sub, you'll be able to see it from the app too.

[–]wholewheatdirtydog0 points1 point  (4 children) | Copy Link

Just tried this in browser said "sorry you can't access this" even after login in browser

[–]DickMystery2 points3 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Turn on desktop browser or try it from a pc, you can't access it with the mobile browser.

[–]wholewheatdirtydog1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Just tried and it worked thanks dude 👍

Eat more.

Listen to him OP: the average adult needs 2000 calories to maintain his weight, so you better start here

[–]RobertCarraway4 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

This OP. I'm 6'2", lifted from 17YO to 27YO, never went much above 165. Thought it was just a skinny phenotype. Now I'm an athletic 195 and wish I had started counting my calories and protein years ago. I can't over-emphasize how crucial diet is if you wish to gain healthy weight.

[–]The_Belony1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

At least you're improving and learning from your mistakes, keep grinding brother

[–]HurricaneHugues18 points19 points  (12 children) | Copy Link

Why are you going to the gym today if you hit full body compounds yesterday? Thats a sure way of getting burnt out fast. Stick to lifting 3 days a week. Eat more protein at breakfast. Go for 5 eggs and 1 cup of oats instead.

[–]Peter_B_Long16 points17 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

It's what newbies do. They get all motivated and riled up about trying to look like Mark Wahlberg. They'll start going to the gym twice a day. They'll be in the gym for 3 hours doing cardio and arms and then in a few weeks they'll get completely burned out and discouraged as to why they aren't making gains.

[–]HurricaneHugues2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Das it mane

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Plus the other problem, you start becoming a gym rat and have nothing to your life apart from excercise

[–]SalporinRP2 points3 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

If he's bulking he can lift 5 days a week easy if he gets good sleep. My first ever bulk at 17 I lifted 5-6 days a week, ate a fuck ton and gained 30lbs in a year. Of that I'd say at least 20 was solid muscle but I was a stick to begin with so that extra bit of fat barely even showed up.

[–]HurricaneHugues0 points1 point  (4 children) | Copy Link

You were doing full body compounds everyday?

[–]SalporinRP0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh shit didn't read that you said full body.

In that case 3 days a week is fine but realistically the best way to pack on mass is to work each body part 2 days a week so 5-6 lifting days.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

What would each of those 5 days look like work out wise? Right now I do full body 3x a week and would like to know what I’ll eventually have to switch to

[–]the-cat-killa0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Day 1 back and biceps

Day 2 chest and tris

Day 3 legs

Day 4 off

Day 5 start over

[–]SalporinRP0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm currently doing Layne Norton's PHAT program which is 5 days of lifting a week.

http://www.simplyshredded.com/mega-feature-layne-norton-training-series-full-powerhypertrophy-routine-updated-2011.html

Scroll towards the bottom of the article where he lays out what a week of the program looks like.

[–]UpperRedSide0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry, "day before yesterday."

Also, spelling.

[–]prrraveen0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Why to eat more protein in breakfast? I take 200gm chicken breast in launch. I usually have idli & oats in morning

[–]HurricaneHugues0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

So you can have more protein throughout the day. 200g of chicken breast is only 62g of protein. That's nothing

[–]WorldlySilver7 points8 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah if you stick to heavy compounds and eat 3500+ calories/day you'll put on weight fast. I went from 6'3, 180 lb to 215 lb in a year of training.

Some of it was fat, but if you're skinny starting out it doesn't really matter.

[–]The__Tren__Train0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

dude don't lift an hour after eating two pounds of food lmao..

[–]2000inchbiceps0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Good luck.

[–]prrraveen0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Start a program, Texases method or strong lift. Log your lifts.

[–]prrraveen0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Use calories calculator app online to know your calories intake. It should be way above 1200. Somewhere around 2000

[–]AshyBoneVR40 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

My brother, I welcome you to the tall and skinny buff club. I'm 6'6" range from 205-210ish pounds. Shit you could literally be me from 10 years ago. Right outta high school I was 6'4" ish and 150. To say I was skinny is a fuckin understatement. My starting bench press was either 95 pounds, or 115, I don't remember. But MAN, it took some doing. I never counted calories and still don't till this day. I just ate more. A hell of a lot more. I also drank 4 eggs every night before 100 push ups, and 100 sit ups.

I gained a little bit of muscle and maybe put on 7 or 8 pounds. It took me a solid 5-6 years to gain any type of muscle mass. I finally crossed into the 200lbs territory two years ago I think. I'll fluctuate but It's been a while since I've been below 200. It sucks for me since I box, I run a lot. I'll do 11 miles in a week plus all the other shit I have to do for boxing. If I could go back, I'd eat better. My body doesn't hold on to fattie foods. If I eat junk food and skip out of the gym I'd actually lose weight. So I had to cut out processed meats and fast food, but everything else is fair game. I used to skip meals and just load up, but now I try to eat every meal, and after working out.

[–]boy_named_su0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

GOMAD, baby

[–]peaceful_strong_man0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Only if it’s raw milk from healthy cows.

[–]FedoraTipper15-1 points0 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

Oatmeal is perhaps the worst meal for bulking, I can't think of anything more filling.

[–]WorldlySilver10 points11 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

What do you eat? Oatmeal ground up in a shake can be easy calories

[–]Peter_B_Long2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

This ^

My pre-workout shake consists of a banana, protein scoop, peanut butter, greek yogurt, and 1 packet of oatmeal. ~700 calories

I've gone to the gym after drinking it and without drinking it and both times I feel the same.

In fact, if I go to the gym fasted or without having eaten, I'll get distracted mid workout thinking about food and some times even convince myself to finish early to go eat.

[–]FedoraTipper150 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

Well I only lift to get into ottermode, so I'm not a bulker. But if I did bulk I would atleast have fun with it.

[–]WorldlySilver0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Why not bulk and go bearmode?

[–]FedoraTipper150 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't like excess body fat

[–]DropDeadTyrant-1 points0 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

1200 calories and 20lb dumbbells? I eat 2500 a day and curl 30lb weights. I can flex my legs but I can't flex my arms lololol.

[–]UpperRedSide1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I was working out at home. It didn't do shit. And I wasn't prioritizing food.

[–]Hotspot33 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Check out this video from a Joe Rogen interview of Firas Zahadi, he talks about doing less weight is much much better for you than doing a lot of weight: https://youtu.be/vR0m0Vt3JF4

Thai really changed the way that I work out. Feels a little silly sometimes when I have 35’s on both ends when doing bench, but I definitely am able to get back to the gym everyday.

[–]lauris652-1 points0 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Dont eat potatoes. They have very high GI. There are better alternatives.

[–]Nergaal-1 points0 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

"tell" TRP is not down. You are so clueless you haven't figured that out by yourself yet.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

Lol, 6' isn't even tall.

[–]UpperRedSide0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy Link

The average male US height is 5'9" buddy.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

I say this as someone who is 5'11. I don't know about you, but I never feel tall whenever I'm out and about. I think tall these days is 6'2+.

[–]UpperRedSide0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Well for one we aren't the same height. And two, the vast majority of guys I encounter in college are shorter than me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol, 5'11 and 6' are basically the same. Funnily enough, can't really the same about where I go to school / live though ...

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
