I've been sort of torn between taking notes/not taking notes and just underlining and reviewing the important sections as necessary. On the one hand, notetaking helps me absorb the info a bit better, but I feel like it kind of puts an unnecessary pressure on me to remember the little details rather than to remember the more important overall messages from the author. Do most of you take notes when you read self-help books (e.g., How to Win Friends, or the Slight Edge)? If yes I'll keep at it -- let me know what you guys think.

I read an article that people that talk to themselves are often very smart. So occasionally (aside from taking some notes), I will rephrase an idea out loud in my own words. I'll just stop reading, think about it for a sec, and just say it to myself.

I haven't been doing this very long, but it feels like it has a positive effect.

  1. I put things I want to do something about into my todo list.

  2. Things I want to know I put into an anki deck.

If I read the book on Kindle, I usually highlight things I want to come back to and then review all the highlights to pick out the above.

This. Spaced repetion works perfectly for remembering things.

I also think that books that gives specific and actionable advices should be memorized for concrete aplication (ex: how to win friends and influence people).

I do that often.

I make the underlines and at same time I put a post-it in the page. Then I go back from beginning and seek each page with the post-it and write those underlines on the pc.

I would say take notes of things you'd want to remember. I know for myself I integrate things better into my train of thought if I transfer it to paper

Mostly I write bullet points of the principal concepts in a notepad file. That way I can read it in a few seconds and if there's something I don't remember well, I can go directly to that chapter and re-read it.

I don't do task list thing. I just read books and absorb it on my skin...

I take notes. I learn more by doing this. I miss important details if I don't. Also, if I have a notebook of good notes, it is easy to go back and read the notes every couple of days/weeks to remember important points.
