"Lifestyle" (self.altTRP)

submitted by uniporrrrn

Recently I've seen a few videos on gay liberals and other leftists complaining about how straight people refer to homosexuality as a "lifestyle". This is from your typical clickbait, tabloid websites like Buzzfeed and Huffington Post.

They complain because homosexuality has been normalized by the left, and they now have to fit themselves into this narrative.

I disagree - being gay used to be quite a lifestyle. As Milo Yiannopoulos recently stated at one of his talks "Nowadays your typical gay is the hand-wringing, nasally pitched crybaby. Being gay didn't mean you just fucked other men, it was a lifestyle where you'd have a weekend of ketamine and alcohol fueled delirium."

This really struck home with me. If being gay means you're the same as a straight guy except into dudes, then there isn't really a point in being gay.

Homosexuality used to be a fringe lifestyle, and since it has been normalized by the left, it lost it's flamboyant flair. When going out in search of a one-night-stand or a relationship, I look to go against the narrative now.

I feel this is why we have a rise in conservatism amongst gays - almost as this is us homos doing what we should as rebelling against a narrative or what is expected from society.

What are your guys thoughts on this?

I took their complaining about anything to simply be a continuation of what they've always known, playing victim. More recently, especially since Obergefell, the full time activists, the sjws, the professional victims have realized that now we've achieved just about full civil/legal equality, they're obsolete. Why does anyone need to donate to HRC if they don't have any discrimiation to fight?

As for conservatives calling homosexuality a lifestyle, who cares? If that's their preferred term, I'll laugh each time they try to say it on TV, sounding awkward as fuck.

As far as the fringe lifestyle, the "community," I have never felt a sense of belonging or camaraderie. Sure when I was 18-26, friends and I would go out to the bars in West Hollywood, but that was just to find a hookup (this was back in the early 2000s, had to do it the old fashioned way). Other than that, I never considered myself part of "the community." I've been to one Pride, and left early. I would rather be watching the Stanley Cup finals with my straight friends than out being flamboyant marching with a rainbow flag. I've always felt the only thing that made me gay was being into guys, and I've never felt that there "isn't a point" to it.

I love Jack Donovan's Androphilia, and agree with him on almost every point, except his dislike for marriage equality.

I say fuck the narrative, it's just going to change again in 5-10 years. And as for politics, the only thing that tied the gays to the left for so long was the war on social issues the religious right waged for the last 30 years. As that war wanes, those who were driven from the conservative side are finding it's acceptable to support that side again. Although I personally can't stand either and am obnoxiously Libertarian,

the only thing that tied the gays to the left for so long was the war on social issues the religious right waged for the last 30 years.

Good to see someone else type that.

Just because I don't want a particular religion driving our society's notion of what we should do for fun and love doesn't mean I want high taxes and excessive regulation when I try to run a business and support my family and community by making some damned money.

Thank you. I drive myself insane trying to explain to some people why I hate both parties. The Republicans want to tell me I can't marry. The Democrats want to tell me I can't carry my groceries home in a plastic bag; But, they want to force any porn I watch to have the dudes wearing small bags. I have no love for either!

Even if it used to be, or often goes hand-in-hand with a certain lifestyle, that still doesn't mean homosexuality implies a specific lifestyle.

A rise in conservatism I'm not sure is a real effect, and if it is, it might be explained by a subset of gays, conservative gays, completely disengaging in decades past so that their views didn't appear to be associated with homosexuality. That's just a hypothesis.

[–]Da-Aaron 0 points1 point  (6 children) | Copy Link

So, you believe that if any gays are actually showing more of their belifs that align with conservative positions, that it's likely not a large or meaningful number of them? It could be only a small subset of malcontents?

[–]hatessw 0 points1 point  (5 children) | Copy Link

No, any subset. Not small subset.

(Edit: to clarify a bit, I'm just suggesting the most conservative gays couldn't be observed in decades past due to disengagement. Hence there is no requirement for that subset to be small or whatever.)

Although I indeed haven't seen any evidence of this move to more conservative opinions on average. Gays seem to be about as liberal as straights from my PoV, but that too is hardly scientific of course.

Americans as a whole, are roughly split 50/50 liberal to conservative. Right down the middle. But as a sampling, gays went 77/23 in the 2012 presidential election.

There is something to be said for metro areas vs. rural, concentrations of gays in LA, NY and SF, but a deviation that big in a sampling of a population that is pretty evenly split?

What makes sense to me, is that a lot more than you are realizing abandoned the GOP when the religious right hijacked it 30 years ago. That they simply couldn't support the party for that key litmus test issue. Now, after its settled, well as soon as Ted Cruz, Roy Moore and that woman from Kentucky shut their collective fucking faces, and the Republican Party drops the marriage amendment from the party platform, they are glad to go back. They supported the Dems because the weight of few issues they agreed on outweighed the many that they didn't. Now that it's not an issue, they aren't so much moving to more conservative opinions, they are just giving them more weight than they used to.

Eventually that political split has to get closer to a balance with the country as a whole.

HIV killed a lot, and past stances had old gays hide a lot more. If openly gays are younger on average, that might go a long way toward explaining it.

Now that it's not an issue

I'm not convinced of this.

Eventually that political split has to get closer to a balance with the country as a whole.

Probably, but that can come from two sides.

[–]Da-Aaron 0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

If gays are already split 77-23 to the Dems, how would it come from two sides?

[–]hatessw 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

The balance can result from changes in beliefs or actions by gays, straights, or both. I expect the latter to happen in the long run.

I will agree that the electorate is shifting; Especially with what is going on with both parties today. I believe we will see a swing toward more Classic Liberalism, and away from what we have been calling liberalism and conservatism.

That shift is already apparent in the GOP, and I'm not even talking about Trump. The number of Gen Xers and Millenials who just won't accept the Republican war on social issues, and are embracing the Ron Paul or Gary Johnson brand of Libertarianism is proof. I'm hopeful that some former Democratic voters will consider that path too

EDIT: Like I said in my first post, obnoxiously Libertarian. Hahah

I agree with Milo that being gay used to imply something about your lifestyle that it doesn't today, but I see no evidence of a rise in conservatism among gays. I see no real difference at all since marriage was legalized, except that we're talking about trans people a lot more.

"This really struck home with me. If being gay means you're the same as a straight guy except into dudes, then there isn't really a point in being gay."

Well, I don't think there is a "point" really. It just is. You grew up and noticed you were attracted to men not women.

That fact shouldn't have any bearing on your level of flamboyancy nor whether you live according to some "lifestyle".

If your preferences align with the "lifestyle" then that's fine, do what you want.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
