How long are you gone? Obviously, the longer the trip, the more you should pack, but if it's for 1-3 days, ask yourself if you really need it.

My usual travel bag: I frequently go on 3(ish)-day trips. Mostly for business, as I set up datacenters around the US. There's no dress code, so my usual nice jeans and polo is fine.

I usually have ONE DRAWSTRING BACKPACK for this.

Contents:

  • 3x polo, briefs, socks
  • 1x jeans, belt, shoes
  • Toiletries bag - (contacts case, saline, glasses, toothbrush, toothpase, hair gel, deodorant)
  • Phone charger, laptop, laptop charger, wristwatch

Wearing:

  • Pajamas (tee, sweats, moccasins)
  • Keys, wallet, phone

You can go without the shaving kit. Is some stubble going to kill you? Worst case - buy a disposable from the local general store (or even the hotel's front desk). By this logic, I can eliminate everything but my glasses from my toiletries bag. Most of that stuff is available everywhere.

I dress comfy for travel. Trust me, it's worth it.

Things you can wear 2 or 3 times: jeans, pajamas. Only pack one set.

This is solid advice, thank you. Do you just use the hotel-provided toiletries to supplement your dopp kit then?

I need to find some better polos too, because I believe they're a really versatile piece. My tailor trashed my three (white, blue, olive) polos, and I want to get some really clean-looking and well-fitting polos to replace them. Hard to find with my build, though, as are most shirts off the rack.

For things like hand soap, shampoo, conditioner? Yeah. That's something that's always provided, free of charge. It's not the best, but it'll do.

Polos are great, but if you need to be a little more formal, every hotel has an iron and board. Fold your dress shirts, you'll be okay and wrinkle-free for your meeting.

Things like hiking boots? Yeah, pack them if you're going hiking. You don't want to screw up your feet. But things like your "products"? You'll live.

Sounds like you're already taking some steps to trim down what you take with you and doing research in what others are doing.

Some questions: Are you mainly traveling for business or pleasure? That makes a difference in what you need to bring. Also, why do you feel the need to bring so much in the way of product? I can understand reactions to certain products, and thus bringing what you need if it's hard to find, but it sounds almost like you have touch of OCD ( Possible?) with the volume that your brining..

I'm shocked when I see travelers with multiple suitcases. I've been there and don't know why. Over the last 4 months, I've been on a plane somewhere just about every 2-3 weeks and have one big two week work and vacation trip planned from the US to 5 countries in Europe that involves plane and rail travel. I'll be bringing only a small Chrome messenger bag and my clothes that I'm wearing. I've actually travelled some of my trips the last few months with a larger messenger bag and a few too many items of clothing. For Europe, it will be cold since it's around thanksgiving. I've purchased a pricey jacket and rain coat that both weigh almost nothing and fold into nothing. I'll be bringing those, two wool shirts (one of which I'll be wearing, two pairs of socks (again, wearing one), one pair of pants I'll be wearing, two sort of high tech pairs of underwear, my cowboy boots, a light wool hoody from chrome, toothbrush and other little things like that and (unfortunately, because of work), my 15" macbook pro. I'll also pack one cheap but nice looking dress shirt from H&M. But my bag will weigh only about 10 pounds. I'll have the advantage of being very mobile very quickly and won't look like a tourist. I can wash things in sinks as needed. I'm willing to toss the dress shirt if needed and also willing to purchase a few things here and there as needed if I'm too cold. Last time I went to Berlin, I brought a large messenger bag and way too many clothes, so, while I travelled light, I was burdened by all these clothes making my bag lopsided and awkward and I don't think I wore half of it, even though it was christmas time and really cold. It's cool that you have the whole shaving kit. I have a safety razor that I'd like to bring, but airport security doesn't like razor blades. I currently have a beard, but like to keep the neck clean. For that, I'll suffer through a disposable razor. My head is shaved too, so I might just allow a little bit of lame looking stubble while on the road. I've learned you just don't need much. Maybe pretend you're on a trip for a few days and live out of a small bag while actually being in your house. Don't use anything that isn't in that bag, with the exception of utensils and stuff, since that's just like eating out while on the road.

look into /r/solotravel. They have tons of guides about exactly this.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
