Hey guys ! So basically I spent a lot of time telling myself I needed to get into shape (160lbs with 32% body fat yuck) and doing nothing to change it. The fact that my SO is in really good shape from all the sports he does just kinda kicked me into gear! So yesterday I went to the gym for the first time in months .. Its not much but its a step forward, right? What have you guys done in self improvement lately?

Its not much

Correction, it's much! Congrats girly :) I hope you are able to stick to your goals.

That's an awesome first step. Getting over that inertia is so tough.

Hey... do you want an accountability buddy?

I need to lose a lot of weight too. I've really ballooned while my boyfriend and I are in an LDR. 185 pounds!! Christ! (Although I have done powerlifting in the past, so a lot of it is still muscle... I'm still getting to the point of just way too fat. Big belly coming in.)

I went hiking for 2 hours last night, stopped drinking beer a couple weeks ago, and am going to try to get back into running... starting tonight.

Starting is the hardest part, so you definitely deserve a pat on the back!

Right now I am the fattest I have ever been, ever ever, and I absolutely hate it! I try not to spend too much time on self-loathing, and just use it as motivation to do better. I have a 5 month old, so I've been taking him out in the stroller and walking a mile around my complex. Baby gets fresh air and some sights, and also a nap, and I get some nice time in nature and some good exercise! I'm also counting calories which has helped me more than any other kind of diet. I used to be super restrictive (read: orthorexia) and it doesn't help me now. I log everything into MyFitnessPal. Last month I tried a diet that cut out sugar, wheat, and dairy, and I lost 12 pounds, but I was pretty much counting calories anyway, so I just switched to that.

I'm subscribed to quite a few subreddits to help motivate me, like loseit, 1200isplenty, 1500isplenty, and a few keto ones because I tend to feel better when I'm not weighed down with too many carbs.

We still eat fast food, so when I go, I don't get fries because they are justa big calorie sucker. I had a chicken sandwich at Wendy's and actually got fries last week and the fries were more calories than the crispy sandwich! Unbelievable! The fries weren't even that good! boo!

Anyway, best of luck to you! You're doing great by taking the first steps :)

Pregnancy really does pack on the weight. The funny thing is whenever I have really started to lose it between kids I have gotten pregnant once again.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children) | Copy Link

Yes! After the queasies went away, I was ravenous. I wish I could say all my weight gain was from pregnancy, but I got pregnant already obese :P good news though, I've already lost the pregnancy weight! Just gotta work on the rest :) and like you, once I Iose the weight I might get pregnant again lol!

I'm in the same boat - I gained some weight after my husband and I got married, and I gained too much weight with this pregnancy. So I still have about 40 pounds to go.

Science has proven that progesterone increases apitite because it causes excessive stomach acid. Not only that but the small intestine becomes more efficient at absorbing calories and nutrition during pregnancy and women find that they need to eat more regularly to keep their blood sugar up. The same effects often take place in women who are on the depo shot. That's why you see so many women who have it balloon.

It actually increases activity in hunger-associated centers in the brain also. Increasing stomach acid doesn't directly impact appetite, but it is at least partially responsible for some of the stomach issues which can impact pregnancy (GERD, nausea, etc). When I was getting my PhD I worked next to a lab where they were studying interactions between hormones and appetite, so I heard about this sort of thing daily for about 5 years lol

Ugh this I dread...I weigh 160 am 5'5 (had two bbs) and can't kick the weight. I get better/stronger at running, hiking, yoga and Pilates but feel like bc of my weight being 30+ of where I was pre-kids, I can't be proud of my body. Every meal is home cooked low to no carbs and I feel like the only way to see myself slimming down is to get real comfortable with the sensation of intense hunger.

Have you spoken to your DR about your concerns/inability to lose weight?

Also, the ladies of /r/xxfitness might be of help

Oooh thanks

I was in a similar boat (5'1" 160 lbs.) I was very discouraged because I only lost 4 lbs in about 3 months! I was eating mainly primal, but I wasn't tracking anything. I started tracking, and restricting my carb intake to 100g carbs or less per day. Which gives me plenty of room for good veggies and maybe some fruit. The weight has started moving at a much better pace the past couple of weeks (6 lbs in about three weeks!)

Really well done on going to the gym, the hardest thing is starting a good habit :)

I put on a lot of weight after my first baby, and it took real effort to shift it (I used the old weightwatchers propoints and pilates mainly) but i'm determined to go into a second pregnancy much fitter in general and keep the weight gain off as much as possible. I've added running with husband and 4yo (on a bike) around the neighbourhood some evenings, and i'm gradually getting better stamina and a bit faster.

I still collapse a bit after we get back, though!

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
