I've been thinking about u/whistling_dixie's field report about "filling your empty cup" all weekend, and Laura Doyle's related encouragement to do three things daily that make you happy. In a nutshell, we are most able to give and show love when we are practicing self care, doing and pursuing things that fill us with peace, joy, satisfaction, pick a positive adjective!

So I'm wondering. What activities fill your cup?

A few for me:

  • Running. Usually outside on trails, sometimes a treadmill. Running is my life blood.

  • Yoga.

  • Cooking. I cook for myself and my SO constantly. I love to cook. It's creative, it's hands-on, and the rewards are so swift!

  • Crafting. I need to make more space for this one. I was feeling kinda blah due to some gray weather and picked up an embroidery project that I hadn't touched in years, and my mood skyrocketed!

  • Podcasts. I love an indulgent podcast on one of my favorite topics! Feminine energy is a big one right now.

  • Reading. Books fill me up to the brim!

  • Time with girlfriends. Is there anything better?

Can't wait to hear what you ladies have to say!

:D :D :D

Great idea for a post. :) Here's mine:

  • Music, obvs. When I was in college and focused on nothing but music, I used to say it was my boyfriend and that's why I had no time to date. I cringe a little when I think about that now, but hey - we've all had our blunder years.

  • My genealogy research. I love finding new information - it's like discovering a new part of myself every time I uncover a new piece.

  • Yoga. It's so blissfully indulgent to me, but it's good for me. There's a teacher in town who is just amazing, I feel like warm chocolate cake when I leave - perfectly gooey, warm, soft and sweet.

  • Walking the trails with my dog. It got up to 30F today so I took him out for the first time in a while. I like it better when no one else is on the trails because we can just meander and take our time, he's got issues with other dogs when he's on leash (we're working on it) so I leave the trail to avoid any confrontations if someone starts coming with another dog.

  • Ballet classes. It's tough for me to find time to go to ballet, but there's a studio nearby that allows drop-in classes. When it works out for my schedule, it's really nice to pop by for a class. Hopefully should have more time for this if the future changes we're hoping for work out.

An amazing yoga teacher makes all the difference! I'm so loyal to mine!

I guess some things I don't get to do so much but my main ones are:

  • Cooking, especially icing cakes and making bread, but really anything a little creative. I don't really get the same when making a staple because it's not as fun to see how it turns out.
  • Swimming, if the water is not too chilly!
  • Listening to audiobooks. I used to be a big reader, but the focus hurts my eye a bit these days so I find audiobooks better.
  • Watching my family together, I love watching my husband and daughter doing things like playing in the forest or when he was building our rabbit hutch and enclosure and he let my daughter do some jobs like hand him nails or paint.

  • Internet stuff - watching vlogs in particular I find quite relaxing if they're chilled out chatty stuff. Watching spot popping videos is my weird guilty pleasure.

  • Walking in the forest or by the canal, pretty and quiet places really help me feel good.

  • Playing with the rabbits. Because my bunnies are super soft and cuddly, and having one just melt while I stroke him is amazingly lovely :)

  • Going to the beautician, I have a really nice one who is makes me feel very pampered, and makes good conversation.

  • Riding, although I don't get to do this much these days, but I did enjoy it a lot.

  • A new one (maybe) is helping out with the creche at my husband's church. I got asked if i could help and found it really nice. Watching little babies playing with toys and having a chat is pretty great!

I love this.

  • Crafting. I'm an avid knitter and embroidery/cross stitcher. But I love to try new crafts and test my skills -- watercolors and pottery were my last two. I also love doing all of these silly crafts for holidays, like paper chains and wreaths and stuff like that.

  • Cooking! I love working through new recipes. I think making soup is my favorite, though. Especially pozole. Mm. Tamales are awesome, too.

  • Walking/hiking. There's nothing more serene that putting in my earbuds and listening to a musical or an audiobook on my morning walks. I've gotten to know so many neighbors (and so many dogs) this way!

  • Shopping. This one sounds silly, but grocery shopping and strolling through thrift shops and markets just makes me feel very centered and at home. I save my grocery shopping for Tuesday mornings because it's so quiet, and I can grab a coffee and chug along. I'm not so much for clothes shopping in malls or high end stores (it's fun to try on $400 dresses at Nordstrom and wonder who can afford them, though!), but with a friend it's nice.

  • Reading. I always have a book on me somehow -- audiobook, kindle, paperback. I don't just have these 700 books sitting around for nothing!

I'm finding myself gravitating toward cross-stitching right now... what are your top three tips for a newbie?

What I really want to do is make a quilt but I have zero supplies... so that's a 2018 dream :)

Oooh, top three tips. Hmm...

  • Get one of those organizers for your floss. Even if you're only working with a few things to begin with, it'll make it so much easier to keep it all together.

  • Don't worry about the back of the hoop being a disaster! You'll learn over time how to make it look neat.

  • Be adventurous -- even if you're working with a specific pattern, don't be afraid to branch out and add your own touch to the design.

Okay, a fourth, even though you didn't ask: Keep a spare hoop and some fabric off to the side to practice with when you get to a harder part.

  • Creative cooking - when I get a little nutty and fun, and sometimes it's a disaster.

  • Any sort of crafting project - whether it's sewing or wreath making. Something fun and artsy.

  • Geneology because I'm an addict.

  • Those paint with wine classes you take with your girlfriends - they are my favorite.

  • Music - singing mainly. But just enjoying music while R is DJ. That's aways really nice in the evenings. The kitchen is a dance floor :)

Ohhh I want to participate!!!

-Skincare and haircare: washing my face everyday first thing when I wake up is a routine that makes me feel refreshed, pretty and feminine. Plus pamping my curls is also very relaxing.

-Get nails and hair done + waxing facial hair: an afternoon of this makes me feel like a new person even if I dye my hair the same color every time haha

-Journaling: very helpful to stay positive, I write about goals in a positive tone and skip through the bad days.

-Dishwashing, clothes folding or putting stuff in their places: makes me feel proud of myself and more relaxed when I'm done. They are chores that really bring me joy and peace and don't feel like a burden at all.

  • Cleaning/Organising: I love simply taking apart and organising any form of clutter, to the point that sometimes hours go by and I don't realise, haha.

  • Dancing: I love dancing with my SO, we do ballroom dancing together and it's basically a Disney moment every moment!

  • Cross Stitching: I've been doing this since I was 11, our house already had so many cross stitch pieces that I can't hang anymore or it looks overdone.

  • Reality TV while doing housework: I love watching Real Housewives, 16 and Pregnant or Jerry Springer while cleaning or cooking.

  • Reading: I have so many books, both digital and paperback and I still have to go through a lot of them. I like reading Conservative books that look critically at Liberalism and Feminism.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
