I've rounded up some resources on Personal Colour Analysis! For those unfamiliar, SCA refers to the multitude of systems and theories related to which colours look good on different people and why. The system that I prefer is Sci/Art, which consists of 12 palettes (known as seasons) that don't overlap.

The blogs I link to below are amazing resources, the 12 Blueprints archive is worth reading! You'll be amazed at what people have discovered about colours and clothing.

Of course you may not even know your season! There are a lot of different quizzes and charts online but this quiz is pretty reliable even though it doesn't cover all possibilities. Essentially you need to figure out if you are Light or Deep (often also called "Dark"), Cool or Warm, and Bright or Soft (often also called "Muted"). Then you figure out which of those characteristics is the most dominant.

If you have neutral undertones there is still a season for you! Your actual skin tone isn't all that matters e.g. it is possible to be Deep but have light skin so definitely consider undertones and how the colours you wear react with your skin. Also not to be confusing but there are some people who don't even look like the archetypes for the season but the colours still work for them. There are a TON of resources that talk about every possible skin/hair/eye combination and their seasons so definitely look them up or post in the comments and maybe we can help.

If you love colour analysis and Sci/Art let me know! Feel free to share other resources, discuss fashion and colours, and ask questions :)

I love this so much! It's completely fascinating to me. But I have the hardest time determining my undertones. I even did a homemade drape test a couple years ago with probably 30 different blouses/scarves, and the only thing I determined was black does not look great on me (washes me out). But hey, at least I figured that out!

I find it fascinating as well! Do you at least know if you are cool, warm, or neutral? Knowing that black doesn't work is actually really useful, you can rule out the Winters and Deep/Dark Autumn. I am just getting back to the computer now (was afk all day) so if I find any new resources I'll share :)

Based on the quiz you linked, I start off on the "Deep-dark" path...then get lost, haha! For reference, my (natural) hair is medium-dark brown and my eyes are medium-dark brown, with both leaning closer to dark than light. My skin is as pale as...I'm basically see-through, haha, with rosy cheeks and nose thanks to rosacea.

Gosh I always do the different analysis and come up with something different every time. But I don't want to spend the money to do the draping (especially if they tell me the colors of my current wardrobe don't look good and then I have to go out and buy new everything!)

I truly believe the Sci/Art is the best system. It is comprehensive, scientific, and incredibly accurate. Here is another post that explains the theory a bit more but there is literally an entire community online and in real life that focuses on Sci/Art. I've been professionally colour matched but I find it really easy to do my own research on the subject and apply what I've learned. I don't think draping is 100% necessary although there will be more trial and error when you figure this out yourself.

I think I'm an autumn. Maybe a deep autumn. I feel like my coloring is most similar to Leighton Meester or Sophia Bush, except I have darker eyebrows and freckles.

I've been trying to figure out my colors since I first stumbled on this stuff! I think that I'm a True/Warm Spring, but I've asked others and some of them disagree.

I have neutral undertones, but tan easily and also get great freckles in the sun, too. My eyes are medium green. My hair is naturally a medium brown with some auburn hints to it. I've had more reddish hair in the past, and it looked natural.

So I think I'm light, warm, and soft. But I also have such a hard time with if it's accurate or not!

Are you sure you're light, warm, and soft? That combination isn't possible in basically every system. When it comes to Sci/Art here is how it breaks down:

  • Winter = deep, cool, clear
  • Spring = light, warm, clear
  • Summer = light, cool, soft
  • Autumn = deep, warm, soft

I did some googling, here are some posts that may help:

If you google "Soft Autumn and Sci Art" you'll see a lot of women who appear to be "light" but really they are classified as deep/dark even the blondes! Their skin just reads as duskier and/or they look better in deeper colours.

Hope this helps!

It looks like I'm way off with what I actually look like. I think I have a hard time conceptualizing my own appearance (I can never tell what my face shape is, and I only know my body shape because of my measurements).

I think that I am deep rather than light, though. So I'd be deep, warm and soft, and thereby an autumn -- which I suppose makes sense to me.

Thanks for the clarity, Camille! You're always such a valuable fountain of knowledge.

I think I will need to get into the IRC tonight for some help with this, I recently changed my haircolor and now I'm having a hard time figuring this out!

Ooh a new look is always fun :) Looking forward to seeing you in the IRC!

I love this stuff, and have spent a lot of time over the last year or two refining my personal palette.

(I think, to an extent, the "seasons" are fairly limited, although they're a great place to start - I ended up taking a couple of photos of myself without makeup in natural light and plopping them in photoshop, then building palettes off of samples I pulled from my skin, eyes, and hair.)

The closest standard palette to my coloring is a the "deep winter soft" or "dusty deep winter" depending on which system you're using. I can pick up colors from muted light autumn palettes without much trouble.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
