Hello ladies! :) Today's post concerns RPWi beauty, specifically hair. On The Rules Revisted Blog, the author makes several posts concerning the importance of a women's hair to their SMV.

How shiny a woman's hair is seems to be indicative of a woman's health to men; here are my tips!

1. Figure out what kind of water you have! Hard water contains minerals which coat the hair, leaving a dull whitish-gray cast - essentially scaling on hair! To remove this scaling requires extremely harsh clarifying or cehlating shampoo, which roughens up the cuticle and strips hair of everything bad (scaling) and everything good (natural oil for shine)

HOW TO REMEDY HARD WATER

  • Use a water filter to remove minerals and "soften" the water. This can be an entirely new system ($$$) a water filtering shower head attachment ($$) or the easiest way which is filling a water filter jug & rinsing with that ($)

TIP: WHEN GOING FROM HARD TO SOFT WATER it is a good idea to chelate your hair for one last time, to ensure you are starting with fresh and clean hair with your new soft water :)

2. Use sulfate free shampoo!! OMG This is going to change your life! My hair is like silk now. Here are 7 Reasons Sulfates are Bad for your Hair with a bunch of fancy shamancy research that I would other wise be copying-and-pasting here.

MY FAVORITE SULFATE FREE SHAMPOOS:

  • OGX teatree & mint hydrating shampoo (I think everything in the line is sulfate free and available at most drugstores!) - $6
  • L'Oreal Ever Line (available at drugstores) - $6-$10

3. Disguise your existing hair's damage with a hair glaze. Heat tools and environmental conditions can cause wear and tear on the cuticle hair shaft, causing it to break, weaken, and split in spots, leading to a dull appearance. This is happening all the time and there really isn't anything you can do to stop it; it is a con of having long hair. his is where a hair glaze or gloss comes in! Essentially the hair you have now is akin to an unpaved road, bumpy all over. The hair gloss fills in the bumps and smooths and even things out. By smoothing the cuticle, the surface reflects more light!

HAIR GLAZE vs. GLOSS

hair glaze = temporary, lasts a week, can be done at home hair gloss = fancy term for clear hair color, semi-permanent and lasts 3-4 weeks, can be done a home or at a salon

Here is article that recommends great hair glazes or glosses, depending on how often and how much you want to spend.

MY RECOMMENDED PRODUCT IS THE JOHN FRIEDA HAIR GLAZE BECAUSE IT IS READILY AVAILABLE AND YOU CAN GET IT IN CLEAR IF YOU DON'T WANT TO USE A COLOR!!

EDIT: OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT THIS PART

4. Use a glossing serum/mist! I see in the comments people have mentioned there use of oils, which I LOVEEEE but using a specific glossing serum is my favorite. This is great for people with dry ends, and glossing mist is essentially a shiny hairspray so it's great for ponytails (If you need more hold just spray your hairspray, wait a few minutes, then spray the glossing spray to add back the shine). For glossing mist I like Frederick Fekkai Sheer Shine Mist (I also like the Glossing Creme) and Kenra Silkening Mist. Please note: I spend I quite a bit more on products I leave on my hair and skin, rather than spending on products that I am essentially washing out/off. PM if you need more budget friendly options :)

Which brings me to my next point: THE SECRET OF MAN CRACK a/k/a Kenra Silkening Gloss. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A HAIR SERUM MEANT TO BE USED EVERY DAY, IT IS NOT A GLAZE/GLOSS EVEN THOUGH IT HAS GLOSS IN THE NAME LOL It is a bit pricy ($20) but a little goes a long way and one bottle usually lasts me 9 months. This is a special hair serum I have found that 9/10 will have every man, woman and child (but especially the men) around you asking what you put on your hair. Basically, it makes your hair smell like STRAWBERRIES, UNICORNS AND MAGIC. I have had men follow me form checkout lines to ask what it is, make me write it down so they can buy it for their wives/GFs THIS STUFF IS A GRENADE OF MAN CANDY, use it with caution!

EDIT: Some more tips I found. Essentially the smoother your hair cuticle, the more light it will reflect.

5. Rinse with freezing cold water. The cold temperature blasts your hair cuticle and closes it, making it the smoothest surface possible.

6. Use a microfiber towel or old tshirt to dry your hair. A regular towel's rough fibers roughs up the cuticle you have just closed and made smooth from the shower.

7. After any heat styling, blast your hair with the cool setting on your blow dryer Frizz = not shiny hair. Frizz can be caused by a variety of things, two of them being heat and friction, which are involved in heat styling. The cold air (or, if you're style is complicated and will be messed up by the wind, stand in front of your freezer for a couple minutes.) will set your hair style.

8. Use a satin or silk pillowcase. Again, prevents friction roughening up the cuticle. BONUS: You skin won't be pushed up against rough cotton and you'll have less wrinkles!

**TL/DR: Get a water filter, use sulfate free shampoo, apply an at home hair glaze/gloss regularity, rinse with cold water, use a tshirt to dry your hair, use a Kenra Silkening gloss serum and Silkening mist as leave in treatment and hair spray, set hair style with cold air, sleep on a satin pillowcase.

Thanks for posting this!

Also Duchess of Cambridge <3 Kate is a beautiful style icon, both in the way she dresses (classic timeless and feminine, but not outdated either) and the way she carries herself. Rarely do you see such elegance and poise in the public sphere, she really is a great example to draw inspiration from!

[–]DrunkBigFoot 4 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I have such a lady crush on Kate!! She is just everything.

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

The Duchess does have great hair! Although my favorite royals hair-wise is Princess Bearice of York (that color!) Crown Princess Mary of Denmark (the Princess that Kate copies LOL) and Queen Rania of Jordan

[–]littleteafox 2 points3 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

Ooh I've never done a gloss/glaze before! When I want shiny I usually use oils.

[–]bakebynumbersEarly 20s, Single 1 point2 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

same!- it looks so interesting. I usually put an anti-frizz oil in my hair after curling or straightening to get the shine back, and every month or so do a coconut oil mask, but a weekly glaze might be something to try next!

[–]littleteafox 2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm going to make an Ulta run after work and grab a red-hair glaze to try in the shower tonight! Much excite!

[–]QueenBee126[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yay!!!!! Please share the results with us! Also make sure you google Ulta $3.50 coupon!! Save you some $$$ :-) Your SO can thank me later lol

[–]QueenBee126[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I think you will LOVE IT!

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Do you use dry oils? I like them but I find even a little oil will make my hair limp. That's why I like glazes :)

[–]OrganicSprout 2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Although I mostly agree with sulfate free shampoo, those with very thin straight hair may not have great results!

Fantastic post! I'm currently dealing with hard water from soft water (well water). So far my hair has been cooperating but my mom warned me that it might turn orange :o

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I have a product at home that helps with the orange, I haven't used it much since we had the softener installed -- I will look it up when I get home!

But some blondes I know use a "purple shampoo" to help with their coloring.

Kenra Silkening Gloss

Would you recommend that gloss or Ulta's Red Color Enhance Glaze for someone with dyed red hair?

[–]eatplaycrush 1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

A glaze is a different product than the gloss she listed. If your hair is thick, coarse, etc that gloss will work, but it will probably need to be re-applied because it is meant more for people with not a ton of hair as it is a light weight serum. The only oil I'll ever use on my hair is Moroccan Oil, http://www.moroccanoil.com/us_en/hair-care-moroccanoil-treatment-original-us , because my hair is very thick, coarse, and long. I'm a colored red head too and the type of oils you use won't really add much depth or tone where as that is what a glaze is intended for

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

A glaze is a different product than the gloss she listed.

Yes this is actually a separate product meant to be used everyday. This is NOT A HAIR GLAZE OR GLOSS, it is actually a serum.

you use won't really add much depth or tone where as that is what a glaze is intended for

Not necesarily! Clear glazes exist!

[–]eatplaycrush 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I have my cos license, I understand clear glazes exist and I do a clear shades on mine time to time, but it does not add much color depth or color tone (maybe I should have wrote it that way) and they are more to make your hair shiny/look healthy.

Edit: obviously color glazes will add more depth and tone. I refuse to live without them 😅

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Hi /u/littleteafox, that is actually a serum. It is just called a gloss but it is a separate product from the hair glazes and glosses I was talking about.

But yes, I would recommend the hair glaze you mention for dyed red hair! John Frieda also makes a good one as well, which I believe is sold at Ulta. Smell which one you like better LOL

[–]BellaScarletta 0 points1 point  (17 children) | Copy Link

Kenra Silkening Gloss

Do you use that instead of these or with them? Can't tell if a different product or different brand of same product. Either way...I'm getting it lol.

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (16 children) | Copy Link

I use it with them! The hair glaze once a week (or hair gloss every month) and then the Silkening Gloss (which is really actually just a serum) everyday.

[–]BellaScarletta 0 points1 point  (15 children) | Copy Link

Oh awesome! Yeah it was the name throwing me off - I have never heard of glazes or glosses (lions and tigers and bears, oh my!) before now so I wasn't sure if it was the same once a month type gloss thing. Both are now on my Amazon Wishlist and payday is Thursday d:

[–]littleteafox 0 points1 point  (14 children) | Copy Link

I think that confused me too. Looks like I have to buy both now, twist me arm!

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Hahaha sorry! You'll thank me later ;)

[–]BellaScarletta 0 points1 point  (12 children) | Copy Link

I just bought both and now there is $0.57 left in my bank account and I don't even regret it...

[–]littleteafox 1 point2 points  (10 children) | Copy Link

Um, me too. I'm in the Ulta parking lot right now lol. The Kenra gloss smells aaaaaamaaazing. Already put it in my hair. Oh yeah, they were giving away sample hairspray with it too.

So now my hair smells awesome and it feels softer. It is shinier too without looking slick or heavy like what happens when you use too much oil.

[–]BellaScarletta 1 point2 points  (8 children) | Copy Link

It is shinier too without looking slick or heavy like what happens when you use too much oil.

This is always my greatest downfall. Also I feel like we are spirit animaling hard right now. I have to wait until Thursday for mine to come in the mail though ): I'm so excited, especially for the Kenra man magnet scent <3 <3

[–]littleteafox 1 point2 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm seriously loving the strawberry Kenra smell. I wish it were stronger, I can only smell it if I sniff my hair. I asked my boyfriend how my hair smelled and he said "fruity", close enough haha.

Ok so my results: I ended up using the John Frieda gloss with cool red in it since Ulta was basically out of every other gloss/glaze and I am impatient. I followed the instructions, which were to use 3-5 pumps (I used 6 for bra-strap length hair) and massage through hair from root to tip after shampooing and then leave it in for at least 3 mins. I left it in for 5, rinsed, then conditioned.

After it was dry it did look a tiny bit glossier, but NO color change! Not even on my roots, which are naturally a medium blonde. So I figure next time I should use more, and leave it in for much longer.

But today my hair is super soft and has a nice shine to it (I used the Kenra again before straightening) and I can't stop playing with it. I used about 3 pumps of the Kenra, expecting it to look way too shiny or oily but it doesn't :)

[–]QueenBee126[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I used about 3 pumps of the Kenra, expecting it to look way too shiny or oily but it doesn't :)

YAY! Also about your glaze, did you clarify your hair first and make sure you didn't have any scaling on your hair? What is your water situation? Hard water might be decreasing the glaze's effectiveness.

[–]BellaScarletta 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

I love the field report -- I'm so excited. I read Amazon reviews that seemed to suggest keeping it on closer to 10 minutes? Some said it was a bit of a bell curve -- for x amount of time it wasn't enough time, but then after too much time it started to reduce its efficacy. I'm not sure about that.

Was actually going to tag in /u/QueenBee126 to see your comment to see if your use is how she recommends it, but she is on her game and already responded hahaha.

Maybe when mine comes in tomorrow I will try 5-6 pumps for 10 minutes and see how that fairs for me?

I used about 3 pumps of the Kenra, expecting it to look way too shiny or oily but it doesn't :)

SO HAPPY TO HEAR. My hair always looks instantly disgusting and greasy any time I even look at a bottle of Argan oil lol.

[–]BellaScarletta 0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

IT IS SITTING ON MY HAIR RIGHT NOW.

I did it on dry hair and intend to let it sit for 20 minutes - every time I saturate my hair I feel like it dries and disappears so I'm not sure how much to add lol. In 9 minutes shall shower and see what I'm working with....

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

You better PM when it comes in! I am so excited!! just girly things

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

/u/BellaScarletta A WOMAN AFTER MY OWN HEART! LOLOLOL

[–]BeneGezzWitch 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

So silkening gloss or silkening mist? Both are $15 on Amazon right now! Thanks!

[–]QueenBee126[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Hi the Kenra Silkening Gloss is an everyday hair serum. The Kenra Silkening mist is a shine hair spray. Pick on according to your needs!

Please note: the Kenra Silkening Gloss is NOT THE SAME as a hair glaze/hair gloss; it simple has gloss in the name but it is a everyday hair serum!

I think the number one thing you need to know is KNOW YOUR HAIR! I have 2B/2C hair that is very porous. I cannons use sulfate free shampoo or I experience a good deal of build up over the course of a month or so. Also one of the big 'shine' boosters people rave about is protein - dear god, if any protein with hits my scalp I am left with a straw mat on my head that I cannot detangle. So for any of you ladies reading this, head over to /r/haircarescience (or /r/curlyhair) and do your research. This is how I discovered I have wavy locks two years ago (at age 30)!

I tried everything to remedy the mysterious hair problem I've had in my new apartment. It never felt clean. Finally I resorted to rinsing with distilled water.

Now I've got that sorted I can look into hair glaze. Sounds fabulous! Thanks for sharing!

Yes ma'am! Ulta brand makes a clear glaze too.

If you wanted to go the hair gloss route, I would try this in clear. All you do is mix it with a developer. Ion is a GREAT brand, their high gloss hair color is the ONLY color I use. I'm trying it next so I'll update this post with my results :-)

There is Henna without color, wich is good as a finish for previously strained hair.

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children) | Copy Link

Henna kind of scares me!! Can you tell us more about it?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

What scares you about Henna?

Using it is pretty straightforward. I always get my Henna in Wholefood - Stores. Most of them have Henna that will not color and just lets your hair shine.

Using Henna (Both with and without color): At home I wash my hair with shampoo or soap that does not contain silicone. Then I towel dry my head and set a pot of water to boil. Mix about 3 tbs henna with a bit of very hot water in a bowl that you’re not too fond of (it will be stained by the henna - if you are using colorless Henna you ought to be fine). The consistency should be a quite thick paste, not too runny. Then apply to your hair, wrap some plastic foil around it and leave it in your hair for at least an hour. Usually I do it on a weekend so I can leave it in for about 5 Hours. The longer you have the mixture on, the more color you will get. Be aware that the mixture may drip. To get the mixture out of your hair, I found the best way is to apply heaps of some cheap conditioner to the hair, massage for a good while and then rinse out. When wet your hair might bleed the color for at least a few days. Thats why I use old towels. If you make too much, just freeze the rest of the mixture and use in the next time.

I use henna, but I have curly hair; I'm not sure how it would work for straight hair. I use it to calm my curl and condition it somewhat because it coats the hair. This coating is permanent and will repel other hair color or highlights. If you use medium brown like I do, it is half henna and half indigo and if you try to bleach your hair the indigo part can turn green (I haven't done this personally).

It really works well for me though, and i really like the subtle copper highlights

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah it's things like this and how permanent it is that make me not want to use it. But different strokes for different folks!

What an interesting post! I have hard water and curly hair so setting a good hair care routine is a lot of trial and error. I'll be sure to go back to your post a couple of times while making my routine.

We don't have a water softener but we have a shower head filter, so at least we can mitigate the damage a bit.

I stocked on sulfate-loaded shampoos recently but when they will be done I will try a sulfate-free shampoo. And I absolutely have to find that Kenra Silkening Gloss! Your description was amazing!

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Hahah thank you! Make sure to try a hair glaze/gloss as well! I think you will really like it!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

I went no poo a long time ago and have not looked back. My hair is luxurious bitch!!!

[–]potentialnrg 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Another way to minimize damage is to put coconut oil on the ends of your hair before washing, especially with longer hair. This has been a hair miracle for me :)

[–]QueenBee126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

OOOOH! Thanks for sharing :)

[–]Kell_Bell_Fell 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Hi! I wanted you to know that I got the Kenra silkening gloss upon your recommendation and it DOES smell like candy and rainbows and all things right with the world! Thank you!!
