I don’t lift just for making life easier to deposit my spunk in vagina or for aesthetics.

I first started lifting again to help my mental health.

Lifting a heavy iron bar is better than any anti depressant. FACT

I live in the north of England and it’s cold this time of year, but thanks to lifting I can tolerate the cold much better and can make do with just wearing jeans a t shirt and a jacket, whilst most non lifters are dressed as Eskimo’s.

I can comfortably sleep on the floor and get the best 8 hrs sleep. And it quite comfortable to do so thanks to the increased muscle gains..

I also find it hard just to sit down or still and don’t play video games anymore really.

Anyone else can think of lesser known benefits thanks to lifting?

[–]AnabolLecter131 points132 points  (15 children) | Copy Link

Lifting is like meditation. You feel the muscle contract, you focus on one thing, you forget about day life bullshit, and you view things with a different perspective.

[–]Pascolino 1 points [recovered]  (3 children) | Copy Link

Something I read from a lifting online guru once "lift with intent. It's not about gains, it's about intent. The focus." That stuck with me. And immediately my lifts improved a lot. Don't just lift; lift like you mean it. Like it means something to you. It's great for mental health.

[–]brooklynbooked 1 points [recovered]  (1 child) | Copy Link

Definitely. Too many guys at the gym are just going through the motions. My girlfriend always asks me how my workout was whenever I go to the gym. I tell her "all my work outs are great". The reason for that? I always lift like my fucking life depends on it. I log every single activity in the gym. Every set, every rep. I am always aiming to improve my lift. Every. Single. Session. That is the mentality required to make gains.

[–]OfficerWade0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

... and the gains will come.

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 4 points5 points  (7 children) | Copy Link

Mind if I borrow that

[–]Final_Pantasy7 points8 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

Yes. It’s a criminal offense to take and use what he typed on a public site open to anyone that want to use it, punishable by death.

Edit: This and my “no u” comment has this guy so upset he’s going through my reddit history and commenting some real upset beta shit. It’s pretty cute.

[–]goathunter051 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

So many elements to it. Its beautiful. Has benefit me in so many ways

[–]User-31f64a4e0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not just about your thoughts.

Exercise of any type - running, lifting, playing a sport - has biochemical effects.

Humans did not evolve to park our asses on chairs. Biochemically speaking, we are meant to be active!

-==-

Speaking of meditation - here is what I found about yoga and meditation. If my mind is too wild and rowdy, yoga helps settle it. If I am dragging and dull, yoga helps me perk up and gives me the energy to meditate.

I haven't tried this with other physical activities, but once any cardio settles down I expect they have similar effects.

[–]montana123450 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I wish I could do that. I still catch myself sometimes drifting off in my mind thinking about too much shit while lifting. I need to work on that

[–]2INNASKILLZ2K1864 points65 points  (13 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, brilliant for mental health, confidence and physical well-being.

And you go the gym...where there are heaps of hot little bitches. So it's good for vision.

[–]lacaguana9 points10 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Sadly not at 5 am, atleast not in my gym.

[–]OfficerWade0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Early bird gets the worm:

[–]Aestheticcunt199617 points18 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Ignore them (not only appear to!) and stride through the gym with obvious intense focus, and they‘ll be unable to resist not to ignore you.

[–]DickMystery1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It's what I mostly do, because I go there to lift and not to flirt/game. Doesn't help you get laid though...

[–]Final_Pantasy7 points8 points  (8 children) | Copy Link

My gym is full of old people that half ass a workout and just talk to each other the whole time. The only attractive person at my gym was the receptionist and she was into promoting MLM scams, healing stones and anal cleansing on her instagram. And a bitchy trainer that will do her best to squeeze into my workout space for some reason.

[–]2INNASKILLZ2K181 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Why're you still going there? Surely there is a gym with a younger crowd.

I don't know about others, but the space I'm in makes a huge difference. Some gyms I just couldn't use

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Better skin complexion... more respect by people in general... people assume you to be alpha and a leader... better posture... clearer head

[–]SwoleyMoleyFrijoley19 points20 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

I recovered from extreme alcohol abuse and depression using the gym I was 295lbs, disgusting, bad hygiene, drinking almost a fifth of vodka a day. Two failed relationships where I was blue pill/beta AF. Once I convinced myself to start doing p90x, i progressed to heavy compound lifts, found leangains 5 years ago, and thanks to that I recovered completely and now am competitive in strongman. Women swolest me all the time. I am a completely different person on a completely different lift path due to lifting. I'm a role model and help other people get started in the gym.

[–]Ryzu1 1 points [recovered]  (1 child) | Copy Link

How the hell did you get into two relationships at 300 pounds?

[–]SwoleyMoleyFrijoley2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, 295 is where i maxed out in my worst times during one of the relationships. Before I started exercising. I fluctuated between 250 and 295. Since then I've been as low as 195. Right now, I'm 220 and look like a beast.

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s good that you turned your life around.

[–]SeasonedRP19 points20 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It gets you accustomed to setting goals and achieving them; short term, intermediate term, and long term. And also teaches that the path to achieving them isn't always linear. You learn to modify and adjust your training as needed. For some it is accomplishing a number on squat or bench press, for others a certain level of muscle mass or fat loss. Regardless, it is the process and the discipline that carries over to other aspects of life rather than the specific goal achieved.

[–]_Last_Man_Standing_14 points15 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I love sleeping on the floor...
I do it every time I have trouble falling asleep...

Anyone else can think of lesser known benefits thanks to lifting?

Even on the lazy day when I do nothing...
If I go to the gym I still don't feel like I wasted the day... as I do when I don't workout...

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah if you had a day without a social even or a plate to fuck the gym gives you fulfilment

[–]RedRocket31013 points14 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Right on the money, seeing my progress motivates me and motivates me to better other aspects of my life as well.

[–]apost5410 points11 points  (9 children) | Copy Link

Now I’m depressed and jacked.

[–]chasethebanks18 points19 points  (8 children) | Copy Link

Better than depressed and skinny

[–]apost541 point2 points  (7 children) | Copy Link

Tfw no amount of women or success could ever bring you contentedness 💯💯😤

[–]ghosts_of_me-1 points0 points  (6 children) | Copy Link

Happiness comes from within.

[–]apost541 point2 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

Happiness is determined mostly by genetics. Makes sense considering the generations of mental health issues plaguing my family. I’m also depressed because life has no objective meaning, but that’s different.

[–]MisterMarbles19882 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

at least ur jacked

[–]apost540 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean I have like... decent definition in my biceps and calves. Nothing insane.

[–]FKaroundNfindOUT0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

It boggles my mind that most seem content to wollow in misery and self pity when causes and solutions are known and proven.

Get comprehensive tests done, eliminate and add foods scientifically and record the results.

Imagine discovering you have a separate genetic mutation from both your parents which makes the absorption of regular B12 nearly nonexistent. Low energy, depressed, introverted. Once I found the solution for $20 every 6 months I get a different form of b12 shipped to my house and can live a normal life. Only took 5 years of searching. Priceless.

[–]ghosts_of_me-1 points0 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Genetics!? Hahaha take some fucking responsibility mate. I hope youre trolling. If not go read some text on Buddhism and stoicism.

[–]apost540 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

http://www.forastateofhappiness.com/tag/50-10-40-formula/

The plurality of the variance in happiness can be explained by genetics. 10% can be attributed to life circumstances.

[–]ttann718 points9 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Stronger bones/muscles, better coordination, better balance, better control over muscles, incorporate balance training so that when your old as shit you won’t fall down and break a hip etc...numerous benefits

[–]philltered0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Need more peeps like you who talk about fitness attributes other than just Strength.

[–]Kurush5592 points3 points  (12 children) | Copy Link

I moved from north england to south england when I was quite young, so dont have great memories of it. I was wondering, is there a decent bodybuilding culture there? Its definitely a lot more popular around the midlands than I've noticed in the south. Probably because Dorian Yates and Eddie Hall were/are both midlands based. Is there anything going on at all up north? Do you see many giants walking around?

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah it’s very popular in Sheffield where I live and has a boxing culture and MMA is getting popular too.

Anthony Joshua trained in Sheffield last year I believe

[–]Kurush5591 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck man, loads of my friends live in sheffield, might end up visiting at some point

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 1 point2 points  (9 children) | Copy Link

A friend of mine is a bodybuilder and a doorman lives in Rotherham. Yorkshire is known for “strongmen”

[–]rugged791 point2 points  (7 children) | Copy Link

Damn bro you're in Yorkshire?

I stayed out in the Leeds area for a few years. Some crazy times. Had a really bangin' geordie main chick out there that was attending uni. Still can't comprehend the women going out in skimpy dresses and no jacket in the cold weather. Clubs got coat checks and shit. Still remember the mass Exodus of people that would go to Ibiza in the summer, and post-club night chicken/kebabs and day afters at Nando's.

[–]brennyflocko1 point2 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

What is geordie

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

Someone from a city called Newcastle in the north east of England

[–]brennyflocko1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

North England slang is cool

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Ay up benny lol

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Wow yeah Geordie girls are on average more attractive than rest of the north of England

[–]rugged791 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah man she was BAD. Like walk down the street during summer and make a 70 year old man "stand-at-attention" bad. I called her "old man Viagra". And she cussed like a sailor at Newcastle football games.

[–]rugged790 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

And why the fuck can't I get a damn John Smith's Extra Smooth anywhere? WTF is this?

[–]moppalady0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Can Confirm Yorkshire has a pretty healthy powerlifting community

[–]DouglasPR2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

the feeling of accomplishment after a nicely executed workout, felling tired tired but in peace. Its addictive

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

If you combine it with the right nutrition it really works for me. Foods that bring me into a real good state are eggs, potato, olive oil (tonnes of it), good veggies I feel godly but if I consume bread, milk, take-away or some anti nutrient type food I feel like I’m an old man withering away.

[–]RedPillAlphaBigCock2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

mental health is the MAIN reason I lift

[–]andreyeurope2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

It might be for some people, but I found myself being less depressed after I stopped going to gym ( I went to gym for 2 years). Maybe it was the part that I was always lean and I always wanted more, or maybe it was the sleep. (I am sleeping on average 2 hours more than I was sleeping when I was going to the gym) People are different. I personally don't feel so awesome as some others are in the gym. I enjoy a lot more sports where you use your body. ( I am a competitive person too) That's just my 2 cents.

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Any activity is better than sat at home playing video games. Best looking guy I know has a “Olympian” physique and just plays sports climbing etc and girls drip at the sight of him

[–]Caper672 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm 30 and steady lifting has turned my penis back into the organ it was when I was 14 years old.

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I stay hard after sex which my plates find amazing. I wait for 5 mins until that “numb” feeling goes away and slide it back in.

[–]BLUEUPTON1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Ever do cold showers, that'll help with cold lots

[–]rugged791 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Improving yourself and doing a money saving activity at the same time, most guys that don't lift have to spend money to "fill" up that time.

More energy to do shit and it usually translates to your personality.

Attractive people make more money and get more raises. If you have worked on your social interactions, in addition to lifting, more people will look to you as a "leader-type" making dealing with them easier.

[–]Eldudearino891 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm curious about this sleeping on the floor thing? I haven't tried it. What exactly does it help achieve? Mental game?

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Just try it man

[–]Eldudearino891 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Believe I shall try it then.

[–]CockyAndHot1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I used to compete in high level powerlifting and avoided cardio like it was the plague. I recently started implementing HIIT and it (very unexpectedly) improved my memory A LOT. I learn so much faster in school and it feels like my brain fog disappeared completely. I know this thread is about lifting, but seriously: do cardio too.

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

For cardio I swim a mile every Sunday “32 lengths” and do sit ups and press ups.

I get bored of treadmill just running on a spot

[–]boy_named_su1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It's also good for:

Your immune system

Your self-reliance as you get older

Practicing stoic discomfort

It's a challenging but achievable goal

[–]AuberyBitoni1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I sleep better, quit playing video games too, meet more interesting people at the gym, have goals in the gym, feel healthier, more confident etc, look better,

Only con is buying clothes. Sweaters/shirts are always tight around my arms and wide around my stomach.

[–]liberty11271 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I personally do powerlifting and to me lifting is about putting yourself in uncomfortable places and trying to remain as calm as possible

When you're attempting a new weight or you're doing pause reps on deadlift bench or squat that are heavier then normal you benefit from subjecting yourself to uncomfortable situations. I feel a direct translation from this to other uncomfortable times in my life such a stressful days at work what other scenarios that involve social matters. I feel like I can think so much better during stressful times and not get ahead of myself because of lifting.

As said before, repeatedly setting and accomplishing new short-term goals and long-term goals create a good habit and has infiltrated itself into other areas of my life. I was never too good with finances or responsible about my financial well-being until I dedicated a lot more time to working out and making better choices.

Also there's some sort of mental gymnastics that occur when it comes to learning how to manage fatigue, program and consistently hit strength goals overtime. My focus has definitely improved because of working out

[–]someonesopinion69693 points4 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Lifting has caused me to be depressed because i can't function properly due to injury.

Better than a anti depressant? well it's certainly better than being a skinny beta

[–]RedPillAlphaBigCock9 points10 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

It's Your Fault for getting injured - don't blame the Iron

hope you get better soon

[–]randarrow1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

True body builders never get injured. /s

[–]serve_my_goddess1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

After lifting for years, I dont even need to lie down to sleep anymore. Ive done so many deadlifts (525 1RM atm) to strengthen my core that it literally keeps me so upright that I can sleep standing up.

[–]Melanoma_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s cool

[–]MemphisBro0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

There’s nothing like people respecting you more and getting out of your way, literally and figuratively, to get what you want.
It’s being an alpha, the guy other guys look up to and the guy that girls want.
Sure it helps in reproduction but quality of life is up at least 100-200%

[–]SkankHuntL890 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m up North mate and lifting and BJJ is the only thing getting me through the long dark cold days.

I noticed I’m more quick witted and I don’t get irritated by shit when I’m hammering das iron.

[–]dabra8660 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I love rest days. It teaches you the idea that life, productivity and creativity are cyclical.

[–]jonivaio0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

It makes me more grounded and less susceptible to drama.

[–]barn3r0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Read Henry Rollins “The Iron”. He was a strongman. Very short read you can google and find, but it’s a good read. How he was a weak beta pussy and his journey to being a strongman and how it made him a man.

[–]midas440 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Completing goals, relieving stress, endorphin promotion, and most of all... the ability to SLEEP BETTER which promotes and nurtures everything positive for the body.

[–]Trip-trader0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Just started lifting I’m on week 2. Already feel mental health improved and feel stronger. I’m learning how to cook (something I never knew how to do). And I’ve finally got a reason to give up video games at night and goto sleep by 1030pm. So I can be up at 630am and hit the gym. So improved sleep has already made a big difference in how I feel. Feels great I wish I had started decades ago. I’m hooked and love this new lifestyle.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
