I am a judgmental motherfucker, y’all know this.

TRM 1 and 2 changed my life. Props Rollo. Love you man.

But when I look at you, watch you present, your mannerisms, body language, how you fail to read your audience and even your poor choice of clothing.

Fuck man.

Damn, I was so shocked the first time I saw him talk on video. Mad respect for the guy, but damn...

What would you like, a suit & tie? More professorial?

[–]CaliEd2561 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. Amazing books, exceptional blogs but commanding an audience presence isn’t on par with books.

Zone of Genius = Writing, Blogging and Educating the Manosphere.

Zone of Competence = Public Speaking

He’s a terrible speaker but a good writer. I am a professor and you just have to get out there and not be so self-referential about yourself, but I do enjoy his books.

Are you meaning to say he’s self-deprecating? I thought self-referential was utilizing yourself as the example and main character too frequently.

[–]ChiCityD0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

I meant both, but I should have said self-deprecating as well, you are correct. It is ok to be a bit self-referential: he could have started by saying his reaction to the Gillette commercial. But what he referenced about himself was about his speaking ability instead of his feelings.

You do realize this video was shot in October of 2018, 4 months before the Gillette commercial aired?

[–]ChiCityD0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

You got me, wow, I am impressed. Here is an idea: he could use a different example such as a different commercial. Would that make you happy?

I do public speaking gigs regularly now and am always looking to improve at it. Can you explain the self-referential part to me?

[–]ChiCityD24 points25 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

He uses a lot of prep time explaining why he is not qualified to give a motivational talk, then says he is better at listening than talking, that he prefers writing to speaking, etc — conditioning the audience for his failure. You just have to accept that you are the expert, you know more than these people, they came to see you, and you are going to give them their money’s worth. Just get out there and say, “I have 5 key observations of the manosphere in 2019, and my overall message is that the movement is growing and becoming mainstream..”. I used to get nervous as hell teaching commercial law to 100 students or giving lectures and speeches. Public speaking is hard. I always respect the audience and tell myself I am equal to them generally but superior in my knowledge of this speech I am about to give. That gives me confidence.

Long time ago at a Toastmaster event, I was told

“There is a reason you are on the stage speaking and not that person in the crowd.”

Bam. Irrational confidence achieved.

So less nice guy and more PUA IDGAF.

That seem oddly and terrifically ironic to me.

Good speech. I liked the SWOT analysis - it should be done annually. The suit works better for you than the beanie.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
