This supports the idea that polygynous groups form mainly because of female mate choice, and not male hoarding.

Polygyny is the natural state for humans and both sexes. A female anthropologist once said "Which woman would not rather be John Kennedy's third wife than Bozo the Clown's first?"

There is no such thing as "natural" state. You could with that same logic argue that rape is the "natural" state for humans because a shitload of animals reproduce mostly through rape and males are physically stronger than females.

Even animal societies build rules around mating.

"Natural" is not always good. Cholera is natural, but it is a deadly disease that we got rid of because it was harmful. Dying at 45 even if you manage to avoid predators and diseases is also natural, but we humans improved our standards of living so that we could live longer.

The natural state of living beings, including humans, is sometimes horrible. Rape is natural, but morally wrong. Humans have existed for 200,000 years and rape has been the main form of reproduction for most of that, just like in many other species, but that does not mean that we should tolerate it in our societies. We are civilized, we oppose those things.

What I mean is that humans have been polygynous for almost the entirety of our existence. Monogamy is an extremely recent invention that only survives because it is enforced by legal sanctions. Women are happier without it.

[–]bcat124[S] 17 points18 points  (5 children) | Copy Link

That's true, but no matter how rare or hard to enforce looksmatched monogamy is, it IS possible. Black vultures for example have an entire social system built around enforcing monogamy : When one member tries to flirt/mate with anyone other than their mate, the entire flock attacks him. There hasn't been a single documented case of extra-pair descendants in black vultures so far.

If a bunch of birds can do it, we can. I feel it's quite defeatist to say "oh well most animals are polygynous, and most of human history is, so that's that" . It can be different.

jfl those vultures are based

[–]redditispurecockshit2 points3 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

It can be but it won't be.

[–]bcat124[S] 12 points13 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

It sure won't be if everybody keeps on saying it's just the natural state for humans.

Hope for social change might be a cope, but it's a cope I'm willing to stand by.

Very noble cope that I happen to agree with. The problem is that there are only two possible ways to achieve that, and both are extremely unlikely. You’d have to do it by force or by withholding betabux en masse. Given the amount of white knighting going on, men are too divided to act in the general interest of men.

I was reading a paper that suggested that the way it was done in the very distant past was to withhold betabux. But that was back when betabux was in very high demand given the harsh living conditions and high mortality rate. So that option is pretty much out since technology and government takes care of most of that.

The only appeal in betabux these days for foids is the status of it.

> that only survives because it has been enforced by legal sanctions.

Also the societies who have it develop better than polygamous ones.

[–]Bluefishermen130 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely true, they´d rather share a 6´3 alpha, being him him 1 time a week, than having a 5´4 beta all fot them.

this study is on birds.. this title is straight wrong, this article no relevance here.

Those statistics are based on asking women, women lie all the goddamn time.

[–]bcat124[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Dude you didn't even read the abstract lmao, this was done on avian species through genetic testing.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
