1) "Creepy" is typically correlated to antisocial - men are by nature less social than women on average, that would explain it partially.

2) Women's faces are deliberately set up in a way that people find it endering - same as with children. Small chin, large eyes, exaggerated facial features.

Example - this girl does ASMR. https://youtu.be/5Ibka2INqYk

She perfectly fits the description of creepy - she has serious psychological issue, ranging from panic attacks to exhibitionism. She has a history of sending naked photos of himself on the internet, and then getting a mental breakdowns. Rest assured, she's batshit insane, and full of red flags. Yet nobody would say she's creepy, because she has a cute face.

And THIS is Jeremy, a Youtuber: https://youtu.be/1CmLxpDgcac

I am almost certain many people would call him "creepy". He's a well adjusted, confident guy with his own hobby and earning from youtube - he's set up well. Yet he's creepy. Why?
Simple.

-small eye distance.

-strong nasolabial folds.

-negative, or almost negative canthal tilt.

-SMALL eyes. That's the biggest secret. Small, deep set eyes.

-glasses. If you don't believe me, check this picture: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/LwqHMU6YwJ4/maxresdefault.jpg

So yeah. "Creepy" typically means "ugly" for many people. This can lead to social ostrachism, which can lead to antisocial behaviour from fear of being hurt or made fun of, and this is a self-inducing process.

I have been there myself - I have a very similar face to Jeremy over here. People have made comments on me , saying I look like an axe murderer, even though I have never hurt anyone (not anyone that didn't try to hurt me anyway), and I am otherwise socially somewhat well adjusted.

Or, you know, the Tokyo yandere stabber... There aren't many things more creepy than sitting on a pool of blood after attempted murder-suicide. And what did she get? Fanart telling her she's cute. At the end of the day, instinct supersedes rationality every time.
Neoteny is a bitch.

[–]Altmark2216 points17 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Neoteny probably plays a role, but I'd wager the main reason men are seen as more 'creepy' then women is because of womens lower disgust threshold, general tendency to see low status/unattractive as a sexual threat (as opposed to men being warmer towards the prospect of sexual relations with a wide spectrum of women) and men seeing 'loners' etc. as potential rivals/threats due to not being part of their coalition.

[–]SophisticatedBean[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Women also have a lower activity level, are physically weaker, more agreeable, less likely to commit violent crime and rape, so there are fewer reasons to be afraid of them. Practically speaking, a low-quality woman cannot force their bad genes upon a man. (Of course, this cartoonish view tends to result in the false conclusion that females would never do bad things etc.) But one should not feel bad that there are multiple mechanisms because all of them can be unified by sex differences in parental investment. Both neoteny and choosiness are mostly parasitic adaptations enabled by women's higher innate value due to their higher parental investment. So Occam's razor does not apply very well to adaptations because evolution tries out lots of things, but it works well at the level of selection pressures.

That too.

How are you able to tell he has small eyes? The canthal tilt looks kind of neutral to me.

[–]HBenedek381 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

It's angled slightly downward, but I agree it is between neutral and negative. Small eye distance? Just look at attractive people's faces, and compare those to his. These is a formula for this, but generally speaking you can tell by instinct. I think there's also a software online that can tell you how attractive a face is based on proportions.

As for small eyes, again, compare it with others.

The worst part is probably the deep seated eyes - that's the ultimate "you're ugly" sign. For example, Cillian Murphy or Joaquin Phoenix - both are otherwisr handsome men, both have deep seated, baggy eyes - and both are cast time after time after time into the role of either effeminate character, or villain.

[–]AnointedServant3950 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Joaquin looks like he has hooded eyes, tho. Cillian Murphy I can see having deep seated eyes.

[–]HBenedek382 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Joaquin's eyes aren't THAT deep seated, but they have these bags below them most of the time that makes him look like he's sickly. I am fairly convinced this, and his eyebrows are the reason he's often cast as the villain.

Example:

https://mondrian.mashable.com/uploads%252Fstory%252Fthumbnail%252F81214%252F2c942d83-4b69-4035-9414-53cc07600923.jpg%252F950x534.jpg?signature=rAgABnxGb81ULk524u93XXyGbys=&source=https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com

here, a bit less pronounced:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/41/Joaquin_Phoenix_at_the_2018_Berlin_Film_Festival.jpg/220px-Joaquin_Phoenix_at_the_2018_Berlin_Film_Festival.jpg

Same thing with Rami Malek - he's a bit cute and dorky, so he gets a pass on being creepy, but his baggy eyes make him unlikely to be cast as the love interest in any movie anytime soon.

Watch this video about eyes, they photoshop his eyes to be "normal" - I bet you can imagine him easier in a romantic comedy now, right?

I don't encourage fapping, but she has nudes.

I wouldn't say she's creepy, but you can tell that she's batshit insane immediately.

-SMALL eyes. That's the biggest secret. Small, deep set eyes.

Bulging eyes are also perceived as creepy. Anything abnormal is.

[–]lotikpotik 1 points [recovered]  (2 children) | Copy Link

Creepy just means ugly, but women's concern is how they are perceived by other people, so calling someone ugly means that people will think negatively of her, but calling someone creepy will get you lots of white knights and possible some innocent dude into trouble.

According to the same study it is both about looks and neurotypical behavior (highlighting the most deterministic things about looks):

  • The person stood too close to your friend (.509)
  • The person had greasy hair (.582)
  • The person had a peculiar smile (.546)
  • The person had bulging eyes (.563)
  • The person had long fingers (.503)
  • The person had unkempt hair (.609)
  • The person had very pale skin (.566)
  • The person had bags under his or her eyes (.599)
  • The person was dressed oddly (.601)
  • The person licked his or her lips frequently (.580)
  • The person was wearing dirty clothes (.571)
  • The person laughed at unpredictable times (.546)
  • The person made it nearly impossible for your friend to leave the conversation without appearing rude (.500)
  • The person relentlessly steered the conversation toward one topic (.519)

I think the best explanation why people's preferences are as narrow and strong about these things is that Fisherian runway/sensory bias. So, yeah, creepiness is basically about bad genes, producing bad looks and bad behavior (bad regarding fitness, especially social fitness, not so much morality or ability to cooperate). The funny thing is though that there is no single underlying factor for bad genes, even though people intuitively believe in that so strongly (halo effect).

I read somewhere long fingers are attractive tho

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
