I really like Kitty from That 70’s Show. She’s a working mom and she just said something I really like, “I bring home the bacon, I fry it in a pan and I never let my husband forget he’s a man.” 😍

The mom character in the movie “A quiet place”.

Please tell me your recommendations on movies that put traditional values as a good thing. I can barely stand most current stuff.

[–]AlertSanity9 points10 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

The couple are actually married in real life and they made this movie together. I thought it was brilliant.

[–]MrsChiliad0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

I know! I thought that was great. I wish there were more movies like it.

Morticia Addams and Valeria from Conan the Barbarian

[–]allmycatsaregay7 points8 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Morticia Addams is a good one!

[–]covfefeismydrug18 points19 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Daphne from the show Frasier. She took care of the men in the show, and I love her style.

[–]ironsoul99[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

omg yes I love Daphne!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I love Daphne too but it was a little different because taking care of Martin and the house was literally her paid job.

[–]Donuts_Or_Bust23 points24 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I love Kitty! While maybe not her most RPW quote, I had, “And by the way I did not spill peppermint schnapps on the Bible — it was Sambuca — I'm not trailer trash,” made into a printed canvas

[–]dobby_h11 points12 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

How about Mrs. Huxtable? I always thought she was very classy.

[–]silvernikki7 points8 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Oooh yes! Strict with the kids, but soft with the husband. Perfect.

Barb Hendrickson from Big Love!

[–]valleycupcake2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

She is pretty next level when it comes to following her captain.

[–]janeaustenfan990 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

I wanted to say that, but wasn’t sure if the polygamy angle was RP. I love that show!

[–]secretladyaccount0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Personally, I see no contradiction between polygamy and RP if it's consensual.

Random info dump: the bring home the bacon line was a commercial jingle from the late 70s or early 80s. It was a feminist spin (because she's a career gal who brings home the bacon) on an older song "I'm a Woman". The older song respects womanhood without placing her in a masculine (provider) position the way the jingle does.

It's a small example of feminism creeping into culture.

Anyway, not a knock on you OP, just something I found interesting the first time I came across it.

I can wash out forty four pairs of socks and have 'em hangin' out on the line

I can starch and iron two dozens shirts 'fore you can count from one to nine

I can scoop up a great big dipper full of lard from the drippin's can

Throw it in the skillet, go out and do my shopping, be back before it melts in the pan

'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

I can rub and scrub til this old house is shinin' like a dime

Feed the baby, grease the car, and powder my face at the same time

Get all dressed up, go out and swing 'til four A.M. and then

Lay down at five, jump up at six, and start all over again

'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

If you come to me sickly you know I'm gonna make you well

If you come to me all hexed up you know I'm gonna break the spell

If you come to me hungry you know I'm gonna fill you full of grits

If it's lovin' you're likin, I'll kiss you and give you the shiverin' fits

'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

I got a twenty dollar gold piece says there ain't nothing I can't do

I can make a dress out of a feed bag and I can make a man out of you

'Cause I'm a woman! A W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, and that's all

Emily Gilmore. She was fierce and outspoken and still ran a successful household and managed to respect her husband. Lorelai was an ungrateful brat.

[–]MrsChiliad6 points7 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Omg I could never stand Lorelei! I ended up giving up on that show and that was one of the reasons. “My life sucks because my parents are so rich”. Oh please.

[–]Kara__El4 Stars0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

I love it, but I also love to critique it and goodness they had white people problems if I ever heard them.

[–]LateralThinker133 Stars0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep. I used to rail at that show. I loved pointing to it and saying, "So you guys realize you're a textbook example of how NOT to live your life, right?"

And the reboot is worse. Rory is such a failure... but she's a strong Feminist!

(The mindless progressive adulation in that show really annoyed me)

[–]Kara__El4 Stars0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Rory is exactly how Rory would turn out. I kind of loved that horrible ending. Lol.

[–]HarshaCity0 points1 point  (6 children) | Copy Link

------Spoiler-------

When Lorelai left that teacher guy the day of their wedding It was confirmed that she was a mess. I was very uncomfortable watching that show since these Gilmore chicks give the vibe of being really nice people, yet they reeked havoc wherever they laid foot. I hated them with passion, but loved everything else about the show.

[–]Kara__El4 Stars0 points1 point  (5 children) | Copy Link

It's so strange to love the show and hate the main characters, but I felt the same way. Poor Max. I hoped he found better.

[–]HarshaCity0 points1 point  (4 children) | Copy Link

I didn't love the show as a whole. In fact, I could not bring myself to watch any further than season 4 because of how I hated the main characters. I loved everything else about Gilmore Girls other than Rory and Lorelai. - The dialogue, secondary characters, the setting, the warm community and everything in between. - but I could not bring myself to root for the protagonist anymore, so I quit the show and I am more happy i did after I read plot of the remaining seasons.

[–]Kara__El4 Stars0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy Link

I loved the ending. Someone who has everything handed to her absolutely turns out to be an entitled screw up.

[–]LateralThinker133 Stars0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

The fact that Rory pissed away a relationship with Huntzberger Jr. still boggles my mind.

It's like imagining the girl from 50 shades rejecting Mr. Gray.

[–]Kara__El4 Stars0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy Link

Ugh. Team Rogan all the way. He was perfect for her. He was my favorite.

[–]LateralThinker133 Stars0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Mine too. Dude put up with her insanity for wayyyy too long. He was much too good for her. I hate, hate, HATE his father but I have to side with him on this one.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Gloria from Modern Family!

[–]PineapplePinups 1 points [recovered]  (1 child) | Copy Link

Trudy Campbell from Mad Men. She never put up with her husband disrespecting her by cheating and managed to lure him back by simply being an amazing woman.

[–]RedditUsernameNo90 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Pretty sure that couple was miserable under all the pressure of 1960s gender roles. That was a main theme of the show...

[–]AlaskaDon4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

That was a jingle from a commercial about 30 years ago. https://youtu.be/jA4DR4vEgrs

[–]silvernikki3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know if this is bad, but one of my role models has always been the Joan Fontaine character from Rebecca -- kind, unassuming, supportive, and always makes her husband smile. Even when things go to shit, she does the best she can to be there for him.

Also, she looks adorable in her twinsets!

[–]catipillar2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I've always loved Dominique Francon.

[–]secretladyaccount2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, all of Ayn Rand's ladies are killin' it.

A guy I dated called me Dominique as my name bc of her, haha. Unfortunately he was an insufferable narcissist and wound up stalking my friend (yes, while DATING ME!), and I had to ghost him. Worst dating decision of my life; I should have listened to all my friends and my male roommates when they said they didn't like his vibe.

[–]oooKenshiooo5 points6 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

The mum from Malcolm in the middle.

Always protected her sons, always had her husband's back.

[–]ironsoul99[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes Lois is so great! I really love her relationship with her husband.

[–]Kara__El4 Stars3 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

She screeched too much for me. She's literally the reason I couldn't get into the show.

[–]oooKenshiooo4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I get it. But if confronted with that kind of family, pretty much any mum would resort to a good old screech.

[–]FluffyLlamaPants1 Star2 points3 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

The not-so- fictional Caroline Ingalls (Mrs. Ingalls in the little house on the prairie TV series). To me, she's a wonderful example of an extremely strong woman who follows her husband's lead with trust, patience, and love. She is still an individual but her focus is providing the home and care for her family.

Aside from that, it's also how the character treats others around her and deals with (insanely great) adversity. For the younger ladies here - if you haven't watched Little House on the Prairie, do yourself a favor. There are very few TV shows that seem to have the power to heal a heart and soul as well as that one. Guaranteed. When I grow up, I want to be like Caroline Ingalls.

Edit: I always confuse her first name. 🤣

[–]HB32343 Stars1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I came here to say Ma Ingalls too!

[–]LateralThinker133 Stars1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Read the books. VERY good, easy reads.

[–]valleycupcake3 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Alex Kirkman from Designated Survivor. She’s successful in her own right and highly intelligent, but she drops her ambition to cheerlead for her husband and support his agenda. She advocates fiercely for her family and is always gentle and feminine.

[–]life_of_an_artist0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

You beat me to the punch! As a future attorney myself Alex is my role model for how to balance my career and family. I wouldn’t necessarily drop my whole career like she does but encouraging Tom to take the HUD position is something I’d absolutely do

[–]maddermortem1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I love her! She’s badass

[–]ProverbialMomma0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

The mom from The Waltons! Oh I love how she encourages and supports her husband and children, also respecting her elders. Such an example of grace and compassion...

so trad

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
