Your title is misleading. They didn't specifically study physical attractiveness. It is possible that the most attractive males happen to also be high in social rank.

When you're pretty, you can get away with more shit.

When you're pretty even unattractive qualities become attractive.

Ugly+Confident=Arrogant. Might work some of the time, but won't work all the time.

Pretty+Docile=Cute. Women might be disappointed, but overall you'll still have more benefits than if you were ugly.

social status is the ultimate predictor in basically every animal. it's just for men right now your social status is almost fully determined by your looks (barring cases of extreme wealth of fame).

Don't the biggest primates (in terms of stature and muscularity) get to mate the most? That's what I've observed on nature documentaries. The male primates fight each other and the biggest one usually wins and gets to mate with the females. So social dominance = physical dominance.

I try to tell men this. Look around and there's lots of fugly men with women. Its a DGAF attitude and perceived strength and dominance that matter most. She wants to be challenged and win his affections, thus the shit testing and how theyll cheat on even wealthy semi chads if theyre too nice and/or supplicating. It literally comes down to push/pull and always giving her the impression you might leave if she doesnt measure up. This keeps women addicted to abusive men for years....
