How do they define psychopathy and psychopathic behaviors?

[–]Altmark22[S] 15 points16 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

According to the study:

Psychopathic traits were assessed with the Self-Report Psychopathy scale (SRP 4; Paulhus et al. 2016), a 64-item measure designed for use in nonoffender populations that captures the four-facet structure of psychopathy (Hare et al. 2018).

The definition of psychopathy, as defined by the author of the self-report scale used in the study, is divided between four-facets:

  • Interpersonal: Superficial charm, deceit, manipulates others.
  • Affective: Callousness, lack of empathy and remorse, shallow emotional depth.
  • Antisocial: Rule breaking, violence, drug use, criminal behavior.
  • Lifestyle: Self-indulgence, impulsiveness, parasitic, sensation seeking.

As mentioned below, the "lifestyle" facet was the the facet that was most heavily linked to women's higher desirability ratings of the more psychopathic men. Women also exhibited a higher vocal pitch (purported to be an objective measure of sexual attraction in women), when asked to reply to the men higher in the "affective" facet of psychopathy.

You mean superficial charm coincides with desirability? What a shocker.

[–]onionknightofknee1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

meh.. on this study

what's the correlation between how they define psychopathy and intelligence? who defines superficial charm vs real charm

my hypothesis are many laws are created by the rich and powerful to regulate the poor people and make them more useful. how many priests who condemn sex before marriage end up molseting kids?

if you believe the above so, if you act in a "psychopathic way", you are doing it because you yourself are rich or powerful. eg, I speed in my car because my time is valuable and i odn't care about a $200 speeding ticket once/year. Higher status males get away with more bad behaviors because they are higher status. also indicates more resources.

women are just attracted to high status males.

Those sound like normal personality traits.

Key Findings:

Method:

  • The first phase relevant to this study had participants viewing a random sample of two dating videos of men that were matched on attractiveness (see section below). Two videos were chosen to provide an analysis of relative attractiveness ratings given by women when comparing two men. Since men were matched on physical attractiveness, differences in ratings across the two videos shown may be due to interactional style attractiveness (i.e., how desirable the men are appearing in their interactions).

  • After rating each video, participants were then instructed to leave a pretend voicemail message for each man that they viewed in the videos, assessing a physiological measure of attractiveness (Fraccaro et al. 2011)

Results:

  • An independent-samples t test was also conducted and showed men who reported having sex had higher levels of psychopathic traits (M = 169.33, SD = 22.65) compared to those reporting not having sex (M = 142.08, SD = 19.84)

  • Hierarchical linear regression showed that the difference in psychopathy of the two men viewed (M = 30.01, SD = 21.87; range 1 to 98) predicted a greater difference in desirability ratings after controlling for women’s age and relationship status (see Table 4), accounting for 11% of the variance in women’s difference scores.

  • Since this analysis involved matched-attractiveness men, this suggests as psychopathic traits markedly differ between two men, those with more psychopathic traits generate higher ratings from women.

  • The results of the facet-level analysis showed women’s voice pitch change was significantly predicted by the model ... These exploratory analyses suggest women may increase their voice pitch to men higher in affective traits but decrease pitch to men higher in antisocial traits.

  • Of the facets, lifestyle traits provided the strongest link to desirability ratings from women. These traits include disinhibition, lack of responsibility, and having a sensation-seeking orientation.

  • In summary, the results provide preliminary support of the sexual exploitation hypothesis of psychopathy in that psychopathic traits led to receiving higher dating desirability ratings from women, even after controlling for their physical attractiveness. Additionally, a greater difference in psychopathy led to more favorable ratings.

Also you do realize what the sexual exploitation hypothesis is right? If you google this Mimicking Desirable Intimate Partners: Adaptationism Applied to an Evolutionary Hypothesis of Psychopathy by Kristopher John Brazil" he is the study author. He states that psychopathic men are excellent at mimicking what women want in a partner.

[–]Altmark22[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

I know that, I've read the study. If you look at the vocal pitch part of the study, however:

Using voice pitch instead of subjective ratings as an indicator of desirability, the results did not suggest a preference for overall psychopathy. Post hoc exploratory analyses did, however, suggest affective traits elicited more interest and antisocial traits less interest based on voice pitch increasing and decreasing, respectively.

These are what are considered the affective traits of psychopathy:

(superficial charm, callousness, lack of empathy)

It still doesn't reflect well on women that they desire such traits, and dispels the virtue signalling bullshit that many women spout about wanting a "kind, considerate man". The author of the study also noted that such traits of psychopathy are strongly linked to sexual sadism, which may help partially explain why so many women have rape fantasies, if they have higher levels of desire for the men that often have the capacity and desire to commit such acts.

"The current study provides evidence for the sexual exploitation hypothesis and thus requires a discussion of how these psychopathic traits may coordinate or function as desirability optimisers. What is it about these traits that may make them effective at mimicking desirable intimate partners to females? These descriptions and the results of this study should inform predictions of the sexual exploitation hypothesis in future research (Platt, 1964).

The interpersonal traits are most obviously representative of attempts to optimise desirability: charming others, believing and convincing others of self-worth and abilities, and manipulating and lying to either denigrate others or enhance the self. These tactics can be done unconvincingly, however, and likely require extensive social processing abilities and skills to exact them effectively and believably. That interpersonal traits correlated with SP and SS gives evidence that interpersonal traits may coexist with social processing abilities and social skills. AFFECTIVE TRAITS may predispose an individual to be able to MANIFEST interpersonal traits without associated feelings of shame and guilt that typically comes from being that way."

yeah so this says they can have the affective traits but are able to manifest traits that make it seem like that you don't have those traits they lie about who they are and do it convincingly.      "Second, they may orient individuals such that they can more easily say one thing (i.e., “you are my soulmate”), but then do another (i.e., sleep with that person’s best friend). Indeed, there is some evidence that individuals higher in psychopathic traits are less susceptible to the influence of cognitive dissonance, suggesting that they are easily able to say and do contradictory things (Murray, Wood, & Lilienfeld, 2012).

This ties to Frank’s (1988) commitment model, whereby people tend to be constrained by emotions of guilt, shame, and remorse to exhibit a predictable (and highly beneficial) commitment to mutually supportive prosocial values. That these are subjectively reduced or absent in psychopathy but nevertheless may still be expressed (e.g., Book, Methot, et al., 2015; Porter et al., 2011) may suggest the importance of emotional expressions in procuring a mate.

With affective traits, there may be the proper expression without the attendant subjective experience of these emotions. This could allow “cheating” on the commitment that underlies those emotions. Thus, higher affective traits may optimise an individual to have a subjectively laissez-faire approach to commitment, allowing them to move from partner to partner without guilt, shame, remorse, or concern for their partner’s interests.

The lifestyle traits of psychopathy (e.g., impulsivity, sensation seeking, lacking goals, irresponsibility) may optimise an individual’s desirability by orienting them as energetic, dominant, and fun individuals. These traits may communicate in a potential romantic context excitement, adventurousness, and “living in the moment.” Indeed, there is evidence that females rank “socially exciting” as the second most important trait they look for in male partners (Buss & Barnes, 1986).

In studies that examine relational boredom, a prototypically boring and undesirable relationship tends to contain features such as lack of fun, not stimulating, no more surprises, and no energy (Harasymchuk & Fehr, 2012). Lifestyle traits may signal to the opposite sex that relational boredom is very unlikely with them, and thus stimulate interest in them as potential romantic partners. The evidence from this study that lifestyle traits associated with higher dating scenario ratings supports this contention." So its not the evil shit that women are attracted to.

Edit the message to include paragraphs and I might reply. I'm not reading that wall of text.

What’s the facial attractiveness of those with high psychopathy?

For all we know, it could just be chad getting away with shit

[–]Altmark22[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

They controlled for physical attractiveness (facial and bodily attractiveness) by sorting the men into different categories based on the judgements of a group of 11 raters ( 7 women, 4 men) blind to the purpose of the study.

Can getting dark triad traits help if you're ok looking?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes

[–]Mediocrecel1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

You can't fake it. You have to be wired that way. This is why mentalcels are a thing.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

You dont need to fake it, drugs can do it. High dosing trenbolone and test made me more like that.

[–]pizzae2 points3 points  (12 children) | Copy Link

What’s the difference between an actual dark triad chad and a mental cel?

[–]Mediocrecel2 points3 points  (11 children) | Copy Link

Dark triad Chad is the gigachad in essence. Mentalcel generally refers to incels who are not incel in looks but despite this their autism, awkwardness, high inhibition, social anxiety, ADHD, etc. holds them back. Not being incel in looks doesn't mean they're chads necessarily, I'd assume most mentalcels are the "average but unattractive to women still" type or the "kinda cute but I don't want to be seen with him" type. Is it possible to be really attractive and still be a mentalcel? Yeah, but you'd have to have a really bad case of mentalcel.

A famous example of a mentalcel in the incel community would be Elliot Rodgers. He's far from ugly, yet was still incel.

If only he didn’t die, he could’ve gotten love letters while in Jail. There’s lots of girls out there that he could’ve had since they like men who had criminalmaxxed

[–]maninacan130 points1 point  (9 children) | Copy Link

This is absolute retardation. Women are not attracted to criminals they are attracted to attractive men elliot rodges was attractive. Women are attracted to psychopaths because they are good at mimicking behaviors that females like humor selflessness adventurous exciting. The author of the study above presented his thesis on this fact. "Mimicking Desirable Intimate Partners: Adaptationism Applied to an Evolutionary Hypothesis of Psychopathy by Kristopher John Brazil" google that and read brazils thesis

[–]pizzae0 points1 point  (8 children) | Copy Link

How can you put the word "psycopath" and "selflessness" in the same sentence? I can get humor, adventurous and exciting, but not "selflessness"

[–]maninacan130 points1 point  (4 children) | Copy Link

What i said "they are good at MIMICKING behaviors that females like humor selflessness adventurous exciting." What i meat by mimicking is that they are putting on an act of selflessness but are not really selfless.

[–]It_rains_you_get_wet0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy Link

Nah, you are just coping. Women are generally attracted to power. Psychopathic males have great potential to be powerful and gain higher status, they are not being held back by moral bs or emotions when it comes to getting what they want. They are also basically fearless and way less reactive to other peoples judgement. Obviously even psychos still need the good looks.

[–]maninacan130 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

If you actually read the study you would be able to tell that are completely wrong. From the study The lifestyle traits of psychopathy (e.g., impulsivity, sensation seeking, lacking goals, irresponsibility) may optimise an individual’s desirability by orienting them as energetic, dominant, and fun individuals. These traits may communicate in a potential romantic context excitement, adventurousness, and “living in the moment.” Indeed, there is evidence that females rank “socially exciting” as the second most important trait they look for in male partners (Buss & Barnes, 1986).

Clearly the take away should be... Be attractive and don't be boring

[–]maninacan130 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy Link

Also from the study "they may orient individuals such that they can more easily say one thing (i.e., “you are my soulmate”), but then do another (i.e., sleep with that person’s best friend). Indeed, there is some evidence that individuals higher in psychopathic traits are less susceptible to the influence of cognitive dissonance, suggesting that they are easily able to say and do contradictory things (Murray, Wood, & Lilienfeld, 2012). Exactly

[–]statusincorporated1 point2 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

lmfao

did they control for the positive ancillary constellation of POSITIVE traits that psychopaths have that non-psychopaths can also possess too, such as charm, etc.?

[–]Altmark22[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children) | Copy Link

constellation of POSITIVE traits that psychopaths have that non-psychopaths can also possess too, such as charm, etc.?

That was the researchers main hypothesis; that psychopathy "exploits" female mate choice via mimicry of positive traits:

We first formulate a plausible evolutionary function, the sexual exploitation hypothesis, that proposes psychopathy exhibits “special design” features for subverting female mate choice, facilitating the induction of favorable impressions and desire in prospective intimate relationships.

However, the facets of psychopathy the women in the study found most desirable are not necessarily positive, drawing doubt on the author's claim that female attraction to the dark triad is chiefly based on "exploitation" (via superficial charm and so on) :

Of the facets, lifestyle traits provided the strongest link to desirability ratings from women. These traits include disinhibition, lack of responsibility, and having a sensation-seeking orientation

[–]statusincorporated1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

The traits you listed aren't themselves negative, either, and indeed could mimic other positive traits.

disinhibition and sensation seeking looks a lot like confidence and the ability to shoulder risk. lack of responsibility looks a lot like strong boundaries.

[–]maninacan130 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

you are correct and the authour even states something similar to this "The lifestyle traits of psychopathy (e.g., impulsivity, sensation seeking, lacking goals, irresponsibility) may optimise an individual’s desirability by orienting them as energetic, dominant, and fun individuals. These traits may communicate in a potential romantic context excitement, adventurousness, and “living in the moment.” Indeed, there is evidence that females rank “socially exciting” as the second most important trait they look for in male partners (Buss & Barnes, 1986).
