I want to announce as we come closer to opening the archive forums on Forums.Red to new posts that we have the technology present to easily migrate an entire subreddit to a new site without losing content and while preserving reddit usernames as you migrate.

I know we are not the only ones on the chopping block, I believe there are other subreddits here who fear they may not have much time left.

Because of this, I am offering to help archive and give a backup plan on Forums.Red to other controversial subreddits. Please contact me if you are a moderator of a subreddit and you are interested.

People don't like having a bunch of different sites and logins like the old days.

Reddit was a good proof of concept to a bunch of different communities all in one site and username with no email sign up.

The smartphone casuality has brought more people to the internet and internet communities which brings the same busybody thought police and concern trolls.

People see profit in catering to those fools that are easily parted with their money and freedom.

Remember not having your real identity tied to online accounts and freedom of speech?

I'm in my mid-thirties. I remember when the online stance on censorship was "The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it". The Net was the "free" world besides the real world, where ideas, culture and arguments roamed wild. Today, online censorship is demanded, celebrated as the cure against evil. Short of P2P technology making this possible, this will never happen at scale, long term. Youtube was a public view of the economics of serving media content and monetizing it.

It just took Google a decade to understand what the television industry already knew. That you must serve advertiser friendly content, and cultivate those relationships in order to survive.

Any "alt" platform at this point must be subsidized by someone with deep pockets that is willing to burn that cash ala Breitbart and Stormfront. Not that Stormfront has "deep pockets" but it is financed directly from white nationalists, there is no viable monetization angle for non-advertiser friendly controversial platforms.

You might be able to slide a TRP variant through, but then do you stop at the white nationalists? What about the jailbait line walkers? Anti military? Homophobes?

Who is going to advertise on your platform when your brand would be aligned with these groups?

"Homophobe" is the language of the enemy, and using it is accepting their frame, that labels anyone who doesn't eagerly embrace and celebrate sodomy as suffering from a mental illness, the irrational fear of sodomy; as opposed to the rational disdain for what was correctly seen as a mental illness by medical/psych industry mere decades ago. Gender vs. sex is a huge trap as well.

I get that. I'm just speaking as a layperson, not someone overly concerned with aligning myself to any side here. More or less, you need income to support this stuff long term.

I don't see anyone, ever, replacing YouTube with a platform that is friendly to content that isn't aligned with advertiser interests.

The way that someone like Nike views the situation, is that if a Nike ad runs before a video arguing that someone "supports gay people, but rejects gay marriage" etc, then pro-gay groups start to paint Nike as "anti gay" etc.

Even in this very reply we can see how language is weaponized. We're on the same side, and now we're already having a discussion to clarify which side who is on.

Now imagine Gladis Jane Normal, how much thought is she going to give headlines that say "Nike jumps on anti gay marriage train, keeps advertisements up?"

That's all I'm getting at.

I understood what you mean, that's probably true almost anywhere which means it's never gonna be easy, almost impossible to make a platform of "real" discussion accessible for a very big number of people.

A platform for a big number of people needs infrastructure which has a cost. That cost needs to be paid. Since the platform does not create anything you can sell, your only revenue comes from advertising and this means you need to censor the "unacceptable" content to make money. And then you're not a forum of open discussion anymore.

Looks like a big, almost universal problem. Thank you for this insight.

I was thinking about something like this and considered it my great idea of a "new internet"

Then I found out something like this exists but it's largely pro-feminist, SUPER pro-LGBT (not talking about "I don't mind lgbt people" I'm talking about safe spaces), etc. Sure you can avoid those spaces but they are being promoted there, making it harder to find the good stuff. Plus, to be frank, I won't give my "business" to places that espouse and promote that bullshit.

I vaguely remember that. I honestly think it was a dog whistle post; the bluepilled moralfags read it at face value, and those who were willing to read about the philosophy headed over, read the sidebar, and gave it a try.

But anyway, T_D and TRP aren’t really related philosophically. T_D is full of tradcons and often absent of critical thinking, though it entertains me and provides an interesting political forum of conservative proclivities. TRP is amoral (which makes tradcons angry), yet pisses off the same lot who hate Trump. Sure they’d try and link the two, but thanks to cooperative but aggressive mod teams, both stay in their own lane. And besides, as I said, we all know that if you ban T_D, the subscribers will ensure the rest of Reddit gets shitted up for months
